Adding color to a steamy outfit?
Bugger, where's the Anatomical board?
I was wondering how I could add some bright color to a very, very brown-based outfit, with black and cream accents. I love brown and coffee colors, and I wouldn't want to take away from the militaristic style I have and go TOO steam-gypsy. Thoughts?

I would go for deep blues, greens and purples. Which admittedly aren't bright, but I think do go with browns and creams; and certainly blues and greens (in the right tones and shades) wouldn't take away from the militaristic style.

I'm not sure how "militaristic" you're starting from, but military dress uniforms have often had some fairly bright trim, for instance on the outside of Mandarin-style collars, on cuffs, and on facings and turnbacks (that is, the parts of the lapels, double-breasts and coat-tails that would be on the inside if one were buttoned up for warmth, but are on the outside when one is buttoned up for show).

I'm not a huge fan of pink, but it does look good with shades of brown and cream.
Re: Adding color to a steamy outfit?
Ok anyone who saw the original colour scheme of the forum will realise that I like bright colours (bear in mind that the 70's style was heavily toned down compared to it...) Anyways certain types of necktie could add a welcome splash of colour, however these could impinge on the militaristic look. However much of the military in Victorian times did wear very bright uniforms, so cumbebunds/sashes could possibly be worn if they aren't too outlandish, otherwise little flecks of colour could also be added using equipment eg: a flask/pouch on a belt with a bright insignia
My other suggestions would be brass buttons & lots of them -but this possibly isn't practical

Re: Adding color to a steamy outfit?
If it's a militaristic uniform then bright colours aren't an issue. Any sorts of red, white or blue accents could be used, either on separate pieces (belt, hat, sash,...) or on trim (patches, epaulets, badges,...)

Re: Adding color to a steamy outfit?
You can do a few things with accessories, I'm sure.
Sew on a few faceted beads here and there, harmonizing with whatever you have going...If you're playing with a military vibe then there's the possibility of making up some medals with bright ribbon-sections, too.
Do you wear a hat? If so there are all manner of things that can go in the band to brighten things up, too.

Re: Adding color to a steamy outfit?
im all thumbs when it comes to color. personally i wear black, grey, off white....and umm...black *blush* sorry i like being monotone and it saves me form the evil yellow ball of doom (the sun) however! have you ever noticed how jewel tones were very comment in old military uniformes? crimson, amethyst purple, cobalt blue, and emerald green were all very common. perhaps that would be a direction to go.
