Cody Kites
Cody's kite was a massive, bulky, complicated kite - a box-kite with more bells and whistles than it knew what to do with. It's as if the inventor saw that a box-kite was good, so he got two, and then saw that wings were good, so he added four, and then scalloped the wing edges just for that Addams look (of course the scalloping is really to reduce flutter). It's a triumph of wild over-engineering.
The thing generated massive amounts of lift, enough to be used as a man-lifter for military observation! They're absolutely lovely and if my current kite aerial photography rig survives, I'm damn tempted to get some plans and put my little Frister & Rossman to action making one over the winter. A big one, a six-footer.
I've never played with box-kites before. Have any goggleers?
