Favorite Anime/Manga
This thread I assume was one of the ones missing since Saturday...I'm curious what everyone's favorites are, steampunk and otherwise.
For Steampunk: I would say I really liked D. Gray man and Samurai 7 (People debate the latter, but I lump in similar genres created recently.)
For nonsteampunk- Right now I really like Nabari No Ou and Mushi-Shi.
You've probably all seen Mushi Shi, but I really like Nabari No Ou because it deals with the "If Ninja's still exhisted" idea and the characters, story and art are extreemly engaging.
The manga is in Yen+ right now...this clip shows the fantastic manga art(spoilerish)

Re: Favorite Anime/Manga
I'll post once more aswell;
Full Metal Alchemist I love it, it's up there in my orderless-top-five animes.
As is The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya! It's gotta be one of the best animes ever! It's got everything, high school kids you can relate to, cute girls, good looking guys , aliens, time travelers, psychics and god! Also video games, paralel worlds, an island with a mansion, a rock concert and a baseball tournament! I'm trying to say quite a bit without giving any story away here! Just go watch it It's brilliantly drawn too, it's one of the best animes ever.
Recently I've been watching Lucky Star at first I thought to myself "what? What is this... whats going on!? Nothing, thats what!!!" But as I watched it more I realized there are alot of things going on they are just little things not like the epic battles you see in other animes
It's very good for when you need a large dose of concentrated anime-cahol but don't feel like anything too serious, also it feels like you can watch it from any point and not be lost because of this it works as the perfect background anime
I love Gravitation too, but most of the time I felt like shouting "Noooo, Suichi! You silly boy!" or "Noooo, Yuki! You mean bastard!!" or "Why did you do that!?!?" But thats what I came to love about it, the characters and thier madness (also the guys are super cute and it's a yaoi ) And it has brilliant J-pop/rock music

Re: Favorite Anime/Manga
mmm....I've been to a few anime conventions, but find that most of what I like is not represented there.
Battles: boring. Mecha...cheesey. Harem stories for prepubescent teens
I have found that I like anything by Satoshi Kon (Millenium Actress, Perfect Blue, Tokyo Godfathers, Paprika)
Haibane Renmei -- great twist on "angels" and philosophical journey
Serial Experiments Lain -- All time favorite, mind bending and suspenseful
Technolyze -- almost as good as Lain, maybe even harder to follow.
Death Note -- surprised by how hooked I was.
Anything by studio Ghibli (of course)
And to my great shame and embarrassment -- Full Moon wo Sagashite. So shoujo it makes me sick, but it shoo me like a rag doll and literally wrung the tears from my eyes.
Currently working on Monster. Heard wonderful things, but its such a time commitment, I'm only 1/4 of the way through.

Re: Favorite Anime/Manga
I like Millenium Actress also,as well as SteamBoy ,one piece,Kamikaze Girls, and moste of the films by Studio Ghibli, and kingdom hearts was a good game when it came out.
I used to like godchild and crimsonhero but I have not read them in two years so.....plus Crimson hero ended.
was thinking about death note is it good?
It is just awful how much R rated comic books thay are selling to kids.it just makes me sick!
I just read Return To Labyrinth, books 1 and 2 thay are weird,I hated the film but the books looked good, thay were ok but the art was why I bought them.

Re: Favorite Anime/Manga
I might have to try some of one or two of these manga. I'd always had an aversion to comic books as a kid, I'd lose track of what was going on, and missed the lack of a cohesive, linear narrative. I guess I'm just not used to the format. I keep hearing how much better some of the manga are than their anime counterparts, or the manga will continue the storyline passed the anime's conclusion. My ex's daughter loves Alichino, so that may be my first manga/comic book foray. Is it any good?
Re: Favorite Anime/Manga
er..she's only 12, but she's pretty advanced for her age. She got through most of War And Peace (combining the audiobook and written together) last year, and her favorite shows are Shingetsutan Sukihime, (monster/vampire) Underworld, Interview with the Vampire, etc.
She came with us to a masqerade ball a few years ago dressed as a Shinigami and was wildly popular. Anyway, we don't sensor what she reads anymore, as long as it's not total "trash" and has some intellectual/emotional value. So absolutely no reality TV, but she can read Dracula if she wants.

Re: Favorite Anime/Manga
Tokyo Godfathers really touched me, so that's high up on my list.
FLCL was brilliant after the initial 'what the hell is going on' feeling.
i really liked the original Fist of the North Star series, despite it being frankly awful, it still draws me in.
and as for ghibli, The Cat Returns is probably my favourite, despite me disliking cats
Paranoia Agent was enjoyable too... but the erm, theme tune irritated me a lot
i started on Monster a few weeks back, and i'm not really feeling it yet, i'm only a few episodes in and am already thinking of giving up.

Re: Favorite Anime/Manga
I have to agree that Texhnolyze is an amazing anime,..... Funny no one mentioned Ergo Proxy or Noein, Two of the most visually facinating anime's I have ever seen.

Re: Favorite Anime/Manga
hehe. yeah, forgot ergo-proxy. Loved it, even though a lot of folks didn't like the slow parts.
hmm.. I'l give FLCL another shot, I saw two episodes then quit, but it consistently gets mentioned, so maybe I didn't stick with it long enough. And the Cat returns! I forgot all about picking that up to watch with my little (4yr old adopted) sister, she loved the Ghibli movies.

Re: Favorite Anime/Manga
Has anyone seen "Le Petite Cosette"? The imagery in that film is amazing.
I noticed at least a couple of anime's set in the Victorian era coming out in Japan in the fall....(not liek I would notice, really)

Re: Favorite Anime/Manga
Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust.
It's the film that started me on my downward spiral from take-it-or-leave-it anime ambivalent to avowed Otaku. Other films that spring to mind are Blood: the Last Vampire and Black Jack.
Hellsing ("In the name of God, impure souls of the living dead shall be banaished into eternal damnation. Amen") is probably my favourite series, in fact most of the Studio Ghonzo ones (sp?) like Gungrave are pretty good. Also special mention must be made of Trigun & it's protagonist Vash the Stampede and, yes, Full Metal Alchemist.

Re: Favorite Anime/Manga
Petite Cossette -- could have used a tighter narrative, but I adored it anyway. I especially covet all the lovely outfits of that one....though I don't imagine that I'd make an especially "petite" Cossette.

Re: Favorite Anime/Manga
Jinglejoe-Thanks, I'm not new to it, that is just what happens when I press the "video" link above...it worked the first time, I'm confused why it no longer does.
It would be nice if people could share images and video...usually a nice image will be the stepping stone that will get me interested in a series. (and make me realize I have it confused with another series, which happens quite often)
I love this image from D. Gray Man, for example
