I will lead with this: All the talk of building a new community went out of the window the moment Brass Goggles returned.

I will follow it up with: Preservation Efforts are hindered by continual use of that forum.

Reason for my thinking is simple: I view Brass Goggles as a terminally ill patient that we are essentially holding vigil over and has had a deathbed rally. we not only cannot, we MUST not, view that in any other sense.

Providence, in whatever guise you wish to invoke, is giving us a chance to gracefully let go and collectivly migrate.

Migrate to here, neverwas, it doens't matter. We need to face that reality and stop lying to ourselves.

The grand lady is giving us this chance.

Edit:
out of the folk i know and consider friends? I've lost three in the past two years

One died right as the pandemic was getting going i know not why and will forever wonder because I talked t othem the day before and.... it will always eat at me that it was suicide and I hadn't done enough. Or that they were sick and didn't see it.

Two turned their backs to me. One because of a community failing and them throwing in my face my own anger issues without bothering to acknowledge anyone else's faults and what closing community off from me does to that mental welbeing. They Sincerely and whoelehartedly believe they are right in talking down to me. This is someone I had helped come to terms with being non binary and kept them from cutting things short, and they threw in my face a point in my life thirteen years ago when i was so mentally blown apart I'd literall ygrasped at straws and ended up eight hours away from home about to board a bus to new york on a hope for better.....

The other is someone i had loved and had known since the mid ninties who revealed to me they had lied to me for years in having any interest at all just for the sake of keeping me around.

So.... i want you to understand all that when I look at this one community I haven't been thrown at and am saying we must leave.

It's difficult to let go. Both in the context of the site, and in the context of your post.

Grieving takes many forms. Some just keep trying to not let go until no other option is left. Others are more able to move on.

I agree with your idea; each time I visit BG now, it takes longer and longer to load up whatever page or thread I'm trying to access. That's why I finally decided to let others scrape off and wayback the RPs and other sections; I just don't have a fast enough machine to do anything efficiently in that area at this point.

We need to migrate; here, or wherever, before we drag the whole thing down prematurely "over there."

But if we're being realistic, there will almost certainly be people who hang on right up to where the lights are switched off and the stage seamsters make off with the curtains.

Personally, at least in the short term, here seems a good enough aggrigate point to gather. I know not what the folk manning the engines have as constraints so I have no idea how long that will remain. Here is a known, and while Mister Otten's forum is a fine one. This is one that is a more widely known lifeboat.

The other thing I'd like to see now is a cleanup and reorganization of Spare Goggles. If we are to link back to a static archive / kernel / what have you, we need this forum clean and with recognizable sections (ie Metaphysical, Tactile, Anatomical, etc.). Many of the threads here are very old with very large gaps of time between the posts (years actually). So Spare Goggles itself needs to archive some material to a special archival section.

How should that job (archiving and deciding what to save) be done? Set up a sitemap similar to or the same as the one of BG.com, and purge the now-existing sections as parts are archived or added to the new ones? A mixture of both? Maybe set up a separate discussion thread on the subject? Is there some kind of committee or action group already formed for the job?

This probably sounds like a rant (so many of my comments do, I know), but it isn't one. I'm asking, seriously, how the job should be done. Might as well start "doing something even if it's wrong," as the saying goes.

I don't see an issue with old sections remaining but having the basic divisions like BG would make it easier for BG people new to SG to work out where everything should go. I don't think we need the Child Boards yet as subsections.

I would like to have a feature like the "new posts" one if possible. The Latest Topics list is helpful but I have to remember when I last read a post to work out which topic has been updated since I last visited SG. Not sure if such a feature is helpful.

I also think the SG logo is too big as the header row of the webpages has a lot of whitespace (for me at least.... I see no ads, so I wouldn't know if ads fill the space for others).

I would split the forum and relegate Spare Goggles to a separate section. Then create a mirror of the directory structure of Brassgoggles on the top of the page. We can take our time cleaning up later. Just an idea.

Yeah. Unfortunately that white space is used for banner type ads. We can't get rid of it.

I'm not really acquainted with the mechanics of this forum yet. I have to start experimenting. I ignore if the forum can track which threads you're following and which you have not read yet. The left column on the index tracks all new posts for the forum, and I know that probably generates the RSS feed (I have seen RSS icons peppered throughout).
