"Building a perfectly round apartment building doesn't make any sense.
How can you hang a painting on a curved wall?
Well you can, and they did. A massive one in fact: 15 metres high and 120 metres long, stretching the entire circumference of the building.
And people came in their droves to see it.
This building was never meant to be a place where people lived, it was meant to be a place where people were amazed and astounded.
It was a Cyclorama.
...
Cycloramas have been around for centuries but, in Australia and the United States at least, they enjoyed a bit of a golden period during the last decade of the 19th century.
Effectively, the Cyclorama was a huge circular building in which massive, 360 degree paintings were hung."
Do any of you know of any old Cyclorama buildings that still exist?

Re: Cycloramas
Not a building per say, but the panorama, diorama in Broken Hill is the sort-of thing they would have shown in a cyclorama.
(A bit of guff in the beginning of the video, then the actual diorama.)

Would have been better if local celebrity artist (now deceased), Pro Hart, had done it out of foodscraps (watch https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8qb4n8yc2so if you don't understand the reference).
The interesting architectural aspect is whether a Cyclorama building is circular or just the room. From the ABC article, it seems at least one building in Melbourne was originally circular, in a fashion. I imagine this creates issues if the building is later reused for other purposes, so I doubt many have been retained.
