Re: At last some word from the front!
We hope for a favourable conclusion during October…
So do we.
I was hoping for something a bit more ... specific? ... datewise. But as a veteran of the IT field, I do know better. The one thing that worries me is the old time estimate rule: Always translate an estimate up to the next larger unit.
(doing the math is left as an exercise for the reader)
No, I really am an optimist, but nobody ever seems to believe that ...

Re: At last some word from the front!
well there is a differance between optamist and idiot. so yes i see your point Mr Bear. hmm my hopes are that BG will come back up and running... but until then i shall continue to sip my tea and persue these boards. since you all seem to be so kind as to not point and make fun of my bad spelling. and everyone here is civil and kind
thanks for the up date!

What'll happen to all that we have here...if they fix BG?

Re: At last some word from the front!
Hmm? Oh, I expect we'll do something like install two-way links in relevant threads, start threads when necessary to continue discussions begun here and carry on as normal, then (if ever the main forum conks out again) drag this lovely little secondary out for another run.

Yeah, I've been thinking about that ...CaptZaphod wrote:But...

First of all, I'm sure this place will be kept up so it will be all ready next time BG goes down.
Secondly, there are at least two things we can do to keep from losing this stuff: we can try to figure out how to copy it on to the Wiki (which will probably be somewhat difficult), and/or we can put links to it on BG (and probably should try to do both).
Also, I was toying with reciprocal links when BG came up briefly, such that a thread could almost seamlessly be continued back there (the last post here links to the first post there, while the first post there links to the first post here so you can easily find the earlier entries). Simple enough.

So in old IBM-speak, a 4 banana job?

4 bananas? Something having to do with the propeller-heads in the monkey cage?
Anyway: WOOT!

Back in the bad old mainframe days, it all started when one IBM programmer, when asked how long a project would take, replied "oh its a one bananna job"...
It sort of acquired a life of its own after that.. I never heard the term much after the late 1970's, though, and very raraley in a nono-IBM context..

Re: At last some word from the front!
Presumably that would relate to the number of bananas the programmer would eat during the course of the repair.
Better than a "two pot noodle" job!

Found a reference..The Kernel wrote:Presumably that would relate to the number of bananas the programmer would eat during the course of the repair.
Better than a "two pot noodle" job!
"At mainframe shops, where the computers have operators for routine administrivia, the programmers and hardware people tend to look down on the operators and claim that a trained monkey could do their job. It is frequently observed that the incentives that would be offered said monkeys can be used as a scale to describe the difficulty of a task. A one-banana problem is simple; hence, “It's only a one-banana job at the most; what's taking them so long?” At IBM, folklore divides the world into one-, two-, and three-banana problems. Other cultures have different hierarchies and may divide them more finely; at ICL, for example, five grapes (a bunch) equals a banana. Their upper limit for the in-house sysapes is said to be two bananas and three grapes (another source claims it's three bananas and one grape, but observes “However, this is subject to local variations, cosmic rays and ISO”). At a complication level any higher than that, one asks the manufacturers to send someone around to check things."
Cheers

Thank the Gods! I have so missed my steampunks! I had to start my next year of college without getting my steampunk fix! Ah! It was dreadful! But at least it has been remedied. Huzzah!

This has been posted on Brass Goggles.
It might be back by next week!(right?).......
« A Message of Hope…Reasons To Be Cheerful….
"In a couple of days you will find that no comments can be posted to the blog…
Don’t worry…!
This is so we can then pack all the furniture into the van …
Then the blog and the forum will be transported to our new home and unpacked…
This may take up to 3 days (including tea breaks and gremlin stomping…)
The DNS config will be updated (I’ll let the experts deal with this while I decide where to put the potted plants..) This happens as fast as the Internet provider wants it to but with mass finger-crossing all will be well…
errr…?
That’s it…
Don’t dally, don’t dilly just follow the van with your old cock linnet…”
