I got a new book!
I am happy! Well, the book is new to me, anyhow, having been published in about... 1858.
The Triumphs of STEAM! Or, Stories From the Lives of Watt, Arkwright, and Stephenson.
It is a bit of a plod, having evidently been written for the "young reader" of the time. Turgid ain't in it, don't you know. But I had to laugh out loud when reading this terribly earnest prose...
Amazing.
Chas.

"We ought to be very thankful that times have changed since then, and that now every fresh discovery of science only tends to promote the happiness and well-being of mankind, instead of being made an instrument by which the masses of the people may be kept in ignorant subjection."
Amazing.

Think my boyfriend's dad has that one... I really should have a leaf through.
