Re: What horrid steampunk names would you saddle your children with?
I also dislike children. In my case, the reason come from having a very, VERY high maximum hearing range, and as such, learning something about children's voices that most folk don't know, specifically that those voices have a very shrill component that extends well above the frequency of a dog whistle. It is literally painful for me to hear them, and I fear I don't mean simply uncomfortably painful. Rather, to hear the voice of a child, especially one that's screaming or whining, is, to me, as painful as having someone physically pour acid into my ear. I literally fall to the ground in pain. So no, I do not like children.

I gotta go with my grandfather, father's, brother's name- Harold Thomas. Or possibly Atticus for a boy.
Girls I would have to go Mildred, Arianna, Cecilia, Gwendolyn, or Daly.

I understand that some people don't wan't children, that's fine, but just to not like the look of them.
and yes thay can be loud, but the fact is that if you don't want them then you dot have to have them.
I just think children are sweet, some people dont, and that is fine,I did not mean for any one to get upset.

I wasn't getting upset. And no. I do not not like them in any way shape or form regardless of wether they can "help it " or not. I do not find them sweet or cute or amusing in any way, all human babies are hideous to me, I do not see their parents in them ( like when people ridiculously claim such things as " ooh he has your eyes/grandfathers ears/second cousin once removed's earlobes ! " ), just ugliness and something grotesque.
No. I will never have any.

Re: What horrid steampunk names would you saddle your children with?
Oh my... what a topic...
Though age is not on my side as far as reproducing myself, I admit to having thought of such things as children's names, should it ever come to pass.
I love the obscure, though i also know other adults currently named Valeria and whatnot, but i find that i'm a true traditionalist when it comes to naming offspring, that i would want to keep names in the family.
Most of my "family" names date to around the turn of the century and before, and include such standards as Albert, Edward, Paul and Matthew. Also Elizabeth, Catherine, Lucy and Martha.
But the one male name that comes through the generations (one in each, including my 40 yr old brother) is Benno. Not quite steampunk, but to me (unfortunately my brother does not feel the same) it is a wonderfully unique name and a fabulous tradition! Now, if i could only convince him to continue the tradition w/ the naming of his next boy...
I think the most "steamy" or "victorian" names from my family may be "Mattias" and "Philomena." I come from a family of midwestern farmers, so creativity in their names wasn't really a priorty.

An acquaintance of mine was describing a family she knew. They had four daughters: Alicia, Patricia, Felicia, and Letitia.
Not particularly steampunk, but Letitia is certainly forgotten.

very old family name
While doing some family history research, I found the name Hark. Upon further investigation I read that he was born with the name Hercules, but was also called Harculus, and Herk. I think Harculus would be a wonderful Steampunk character name.

Re: What horrid steampunk names would you saddle your children with?
As might be expected from a member of a retro-futurist group, I have a bit of a traditional mind-set. I feel that the older names should be retrieved; some are problematic, but there are beautiful names out there. And I feel that a 'cutesie-poo' spelling of a normal name, or worse, one made up to suit the vanity of the parents, are tantamount to child abuse.
The last few pages have good examples of each. And really, if one wants something 'unique' for a child's name, the traditional ones - especially ones from the family tree - are more useful. Rather than saddling a child with a name that absolutely requires correction (No, ma'am, it's Madysyn with two 'y's...) something from the family - say, three or four generations back - would be a better choice. Despite repeats, if you include uncles and aunts, you could have dozens of choices in that group.
Take my family, for instance; for girls:
Gloria
Irene
Jerusha
Marjorie
Katherine
Adele
Dora
for boys:
Charles
Ballard
Walter
Lowry
Johann (came over from Wurttemburg, 1750)
and so on. There is a tradition in my family as well for naming boys after famous Generals, as we were a military family.
So there are plenty of examples for each gender which could maintain an historic continuity, provide that "uniqueness" parents seem to crave these days, and avoid the special-spelling that is tough on kids.
Cheers!
Chas.

Well.. not really all that steampunk, but I'm very into the obscure. I'm planning on four children, two boys, two girls ideally. The girls will be Wednesday and Nightingale, and the boys Alistair and Dante. Not sure what to do if I end up with more than two of one gender, though! Or what middle names. I rather think Wednesday Aurelie might be nice...

Re: What horrid steampunk names would you saddle your children with?
Well, my daughter (first and only child-SO FAR!), we named her Charity Irene. Interesting enough story behind it, Chairty came about when I was around 13-14 years old, playing billards. Was sinking for the other, rather than myself, and made the offhanded comment it's because I was a charitable guy, so much so, I would name my first daughter Charity! And so I did! Irene is for my wife's great grandmother who passed before she was born.
Our first SON will be named Gabriel Alexander. I shall call him Alec.
Other names:
Boy: Xenos Markus and Nathaniel Tobias are the only two set in STONE. Ones I'm pushing for, being the insane twisted individual that I am: Maher-shalal-hash-baz Mephibosheth (so they'll hate me in kindergarten) and Tedward Jimmothy (I was drunk. What?)!
Girl: Aeryn Skye is all we've really discussed, as far as set in stone. I'm also fond of the name Victoria Anne/Anne Victoria. If the powers that be decide NOT to grand me a son, then Gabriella Alexia would work nicely. I also dig the name Moira. Have not decided on a middle name that flows with it.
For EITHER, Kick-a-Hole-in-the-Soup is an old favorite of mine. Not really steampunk, but fun none the less!

Re: What horrid steampunk names would you saddle your children with?
No Children are being planned but Im getting married next year..... now I have been told by the future mrs that im not allowed to double barrel our names though I think it would be very cool If i got my way then I would be MR Wesley Wayne Perriman-Batty, I quite fancy doing carrying on in education so I can have the Official title of Professor Perriman-Batty
Now the future wifes opinion on why I can not go down this line as It will be unfair on our children (as least she has come to terms that there might actually be children one day)
So I do sit and think what I think would be a good name for prosperity then down scale the idea so it would appeal to the wife!
Plus my mother used a lots of the cool names i quite fancied to name her pets!!! so that a no to Baldric, Silas, Phoebe, Hector, Tabitha, Bertie, Lucy, Roscoe, Rocky.
Even just using the surname I was given has its own interesting problems a good name like Oscar Alexander Perriman would result in the initials being O.A.P
Marcus Oliver Perriman = M.O.P
and the list goes on but the best one by far is the future wife's initials become H.M.P (Her Majesty's Prison) and what better acronym for a wife is there?

I've always been fond of the name Anastasia. Of course there's Cain for a son.
For twins there could be
Castor and Pollocks
Henry and Edward (middle names would be Jekyl and Hyde of course)
Brutus and Corineus
Gog and Magok
Chang and Eng
Ant and Dec

I already have 4 offspring and 3 grand kids plus one on the way so I have absolutely no intention of spawning. However my mis-guided son, who has a good solid Victorian name already, claims that if he had known that Hepzibah was a family name (back in the 19th C) then he would have preferred that, despite my pointing out that it is a girl's name!

Whoa!
That was a tangenty thread and no mistake!
Passions do seem to have run slightly high on this Forum at times I've noticed. Perhaps it's the phsychological shock of having the Brass Goggles umbilical cord uncerimoniously cut!
I have no children and I don't expect I ever will at this point, but for a Girl I'm very taken with the name Ashelia, inspired by Final Fantasy twelve.
And for a Boy? If I was feeling particularly cruel on naming day, Arbuthnot has always made me chuckle.
