Astounding Adventures! Empty Astounding Adventures!

Post  Captain Minty Gearhertz Fri Sep 12, 2008 10:18 pm

Due to the continuing loss of the BG forums (which drove me to facebook of all places Neutral ) i decided to continue work on a fiction i started waaaay back in april-ish, then hit a massive solid iron writers block (no thanks to a freind of mine) Well, the good news is i have written quite a bit and i have plenty of inspiration to go on, i was just wondering if anyone would like to feature in my story. I need taxi cab drivers, librarians, tutors, lords, ladies and thousands of others. As my story has been created around the steampunk personai (-s, -es?) of myself, my sister and our friends i would love to insert small refrences to the members of Brass Goggles, some might just be the name of a shop or company, an announced guest, a passing helpful soul or a much moaned about tutor. I need a name, a brief history/personality or just some prefrences for a job. It would be great to be able to have more "real" people for my story.
Thanks for reading, and thanks in advance to all those who choose to lend themselves to my work of fiction cat

I'd like to feature as Mr Rickwood Katz, professional scribe, diarist, note taker and [for the right commision] Ghost writer!

With cropped monkish hair, over a pale forehead, supported by watery blue eyes.

Clad in a close fitting 3 piece black suit and wearing a blue-tinted pince-nez "It's my eyes... the light you see?"

I would like to appear as an odd lable attached to a jar / bottle / container / whatever that simply says "Siliconous Skum" which is unclear as to whether it is the name of the owner of said item - or the contents, badly spelled (or actually Norwegian for "silicon foam"...). Laughing

failing that, chuck me in as a scientist or inventor type. Wink

Of course. My story may take a while to get around to characters, unless you want to be based in the global library. At the moment its still main character introductions and i have lots of story to tell. I am storing all these characters on my laptop ready to be used as and when i need them. I still have a MSN conversation saved where my friend told me all about his characters desired speech patterns and appearance. lol!

Post  Mrs. Sullivan Sat Sep 13, 2008 12:59 am

I would enjoy making an appearance in your story - Mrs. Sullivan is a "worthy" middle-aged lady, plump of figure, short of stature, a bit of a busybody (but her heart's in the right place!). She's always into the latest fad, prone to flights of fancy, and married to the long-suffering Mr. Sullivan, a tall, silent, bearded gent, presumed to be some sort of inventor (but no one really knows what he's up to in that workshop of his!).

Post  Dr. Oliver Cross Sat Sep 13, 2008 10:10 am

I would also vastly enjoy being included. Dr. Cross is a man of science, an alchemist, and an artificer, but above all he's a man who holds that the ends justify ANY means. He's not above dissecting a live child simply to learn what makes him tick. Indeed, he's done just that, on more than one occasion, but somehow he still manages to be (barely) ahead of the Metropolitan Police.

Of course, Dr Cross would make a fine associate of Lord Sam, (my friends character) he too has somewhat..murky motivations and history. The Sullivans would make good neighbours of one of the characters. Thanks for lending yourselves =D

Post  OldProfessorBear Sat Sep 13, 2008 3:34 pm

You may if you wish include Old Professor Bear.

He is old, a professor (if not entirely reputable), and (if your world supports it) a werebear. (If your world does not support werebears, he may be reputed to be such.)

He is a bit of a curmudgeon, as you might expect, and is frequently heard to mutter "Grumble, grumble, grumble".

As you may (or may not) be able to see in my avatar, he has a tendency to affect a floppy medieval sort of scholar's headgear, rather than the more usual mortarboard.

(Strangely enough, not a few days after I'd adopted this avatar - which, incidentally, is based on an illustration by Mr Howard Pyle - I espied a newly-graduated student (it being June and this being a college town) across the street from my abode wearing the identical hat! His being a wine-red velvet, I believe, with gold tassel as per OPB. Incidentally, the OPB identity was adopted many years before the avatar.)

Post  Jemima Annabelle Clough Sat Sep 13, 2008 6:44 pm

If you have need of a botanist and occasional adventurer, then please do drop in Mrs Clough. She would definitely frequent the library (and may have penned a tome or two, which she will only go near if her theoretical (as opposed to field) research takes her near them). She travels in search of new plants, writing about them, painting them (quicker and more accurate than dageurrotypes), and bringing home specimens, seeds etc. She is interested this to the point of obsession, which means she is not always fully alert to any dangers. This has once led her to wander unintentionally into unfriendly territories whilst documenting orchids. Some of the guerillas in the area somehow mistook her for a fashionable Londoner, and kidnapped her with the hope of getting a reasonable amount of money. However, things didn't quite go to plan as she was able to negotiate her own release before an envoy from Great Britain could arrive (OK - she didn't so much negotiate her release as bore them into releasing her by her seemingly never ending talk about the orchids of the area). She now mostly travels with her husband, but was renowned for her solo travels and expeditions when she was younger. Looks wise she's about average height and can still look as slender as she did in her youth, assuming she wears the right corset. Her auburn hair is long and curly, and can't quite be coaxed completely into fashionable hairstyles. Her clothing is almost always more practical than fashionable.

Well, i have recorded everything that has been mentioned. A rumored were-bear is very good for my world. As for everyone else, the population of Albion, the grand jewel of the British Empire is getting more and more populated. A Botany tome would be most helpful for research into the dangers of our adventure locations. Everyone will feature, eventualy, that i promise Very Happy

Perhaps there could be a passing reference to the "Steel Breeze", the most reknowned (one of the only) airships in the Pacific Northwest? All the Vancouver Air Privateers (just me) would appreciate it.

More details would be quite welcome. My character is an aviator and attends the academy so would be in the know about flying things. Plus i would love her to have lots of technobabel-y steam-spock speak with the engineer about all the flying machiens and their counterparts.

Post  Dax Tue Sep 16, 2008 6:24 am

Feel free to use the name and character "Dax".

He has apparently had an excellent reputation, and maintains a respecatable appearance, but is not an altogether gentlemanly sort. Never been heard to use any other appellation, save his rather unconventional monosyllable. Always seem to have cash on hand, but one is never too certain to whom the cash actually might belong. Prone to extended, unexplained, absences. Said to be an acquaintance of a certain prominent underworld figure...

I'd hate for you to worry yourself over trying to fit all these characters in your story, even just as cameos. That kind of stress could lead to frequent bouts of writer's block.

That being said, if you could use a (preferably American) dispatch rider and courier, with an interest in most all fields of study, and hard learned skills in improvised engineering and repair, I might be able to help.
Andrew G. Morgan can ride, drive, and pilot anything, and do so with speed and grace. Tall and skinny, with shaggy brown hair and a reddish beard, he may even look a bit seedy in his worn brown riding gear. But he's a kindhearted and courteous man, trying to develop a reputation for being good at what he does.

Dear Sir...
I think that you are then unacquainted with other ships in your airspace.

I speak of the USS Andoria and the Heart of Gold -- an independent shuttle that docks there upon when the mood suits.

Regular flights between Portlandia and Seatowne.

And whom, might I ask issued your letter of marque?
