Re: Celestial Orb (continued)
Ah, what fuel for the imagination this is, and so well detailed too! I am particularly enamoured of the finish on the engines. I'm envious enough to want to replicate the finish on part of my current project, but I doubt I'd be better with an airbrush than I am with a pen; trying to write readably makes my hands hurt.

Re: Celestial Orb (continued)
Worked up a ladder to get in and out:
lowered
raised
I was a little worried that it might make the piece look unbalanced, but the large cargo door seems to counter it:
More paint tomorrow!

Re: Celestial Orb (continued)
I just noticed something odd. I can't see any means of force-coupling between the engines and the main sphere. I hope I'm not causing problems by bringing it up, but it struck me as odd enough that I felt I ought to mention it. The walkways don't look strong enough to take the drive. I am assuming some form of rocket propulsion, if the drive is of a more ætheric nature then traditional force-coupling may not be relevant.

Re: Celestial Orb (continued)
Hmm, good point, well made Mr. Grammatikidis: unseen in these picture is a large girder running around the engine walkway, scaled up it would be around a foot square, should be strong enough when coupled with the large amount of Cavorite used in the Orb's construction.Mr. Ethan Grammatikidis wrote:I just noticed something odd. Re: Celestial Orb (continued)
I've now sorted out the whole cargo door access situation, by installing a sliding crane:
in
out
And, after due cogitation, I've added a maintenance walkway to the third buttress, to balance the ladder:
A little more paint, some glazing in the top cabin (with lighting), and then I can move onto the display base...

Re: Celestial Orb (continued)
Thank you all, as ever, for your interest!
Well, haven't been able to get much more done- real life gets in the way- but I have managed to put some more paint on the iris style inner cargo door:
Still need to sort out some manual workings for the inside of the door...
And I've 'acquired' a piece of acrylic for the base, already cut into an appropriately sized circle:
I'm toying with the idea of purchasing another dome, like the one I used for my space helmet, as a sort of bell-jar style case:
What d'you think?

Re: Celestial Orb (continued)
I think the fact that I start squeeing whenever I see you've updated this thread, before I've even seen what the update looks like, probably conveys my appreciation for what you've managed here....
I like all the new additions, and think the dome idea would work well.

Seriously, can we have like a lock of hair or some blood to mix into the solution?Gazongola wrote:This man. I must tap his blood to go in my awesome sauce bottles.

Oh, my vote would be for a blood donation for the Awesome Sauce! With any luck, all of that talent will prove to be contagious, and I shall stock gallons of the stuff in my pantry, because I am In Serious Like of the good Doktor's extreme creativity!

Not to get too far ahead, but you know what would be nice. redsand on the base (obviously), and a cage by those crates with a little green fella in it.

Me, too! And here I was trying to figure out how to cajole an invitation to visit such a fine nautical vessel out of Mr. Gazongola....
I've been on an aircraft carrier. It wasn't very steampunk, though.

Re: Celestial Orb (continued)
Ah those American carriers are wonderfully steamy - steam catapults and steam turbine drive units (OK so the steam is made from a nuclear reactor - but who's being picky)
