Gizmodo: "Steampunk is dead"
OK, I don't like the typical Steampunk controversy topics, but when Gizmodo post something like this, I start to getting worried ... Two options:
1) Steampunk actually become a joke (I really doubt it).
2) Gizmodo is dead (quite possible).

Re: Gizmodo: "Steampunk is dead"
Actually, Gizmodo's headline was "Put the final nail in Steampunk's coffin." I asure you Steampunk, more than most, will be particularly appreciative of a sturdy, well-crafted coffin when the time eventually comes to shuffle off this mortal Tesla coil.
I seriously don't see that happening any time soon, though...

Re: Gizmodo: "Steampunk is dead"
Personally, I worry that people are worrying too much about whether their preferred aesthetics are fashionable or not.
That being said, those were some delightful photoshops. I particularly liked the thighmaster and the automatic-beating-a-dead-horse machine.
Lord knows I could use some mechanical help beating all the dead horses I have.

Re: Gizmodo: "Steampunk is dead"
Oh gawds, people are saying this already? Ah well.
I'll start the chorus, shall I?
~At this point I would have you imagine a frenetic violin and theremin duet, however you think it should go.~
I don't mean it of course. So long as there is a single person left who believes in the politics of self-empowerment through technological know-how coupled with this kind of pretense and elegance then our little dalliance with Steampunk will remain alive.
With the throng we have amassed at the moment, and some of the beautiful things that have been built, I'd say we're going strong.
I should note that I don't mean any insult to Datamancer by that reference in the first verse. he does really, really good work, and he's shaping the asthetic by what he does. The fact that he's put up followable documentation of his projects is extremely helpful, the fact that he can work as an artist the way he is is brilliant, and I generally think he's Steampunk as f*ck.
Equally though it seems to me that even mroe steampunk than owning a keyboard (say) made glorious by this fine artisan is having one you've modded yourself. his work is still a damn sight better than the mass churned out gear we see in every internet cafe and office block, though.
I'll start the chorus, shall I?
Yes that's right, steampunk is dead
It's just another cheap product for the consumers head
Busted clocks and modded computers
Victoriana with visible motors
Hot Topic's got gears and brass,
Datamancer sells off keyboards for cash
Steampunk became a fashion just like hippy used to be
Ain't got a thing to do with your or me
Movements are systems and systems kill
Movements are expressions of the public will
Steampunk became a movement full o' tophats and blimps
Attracted the attention of illiterate chimps
Stoking the boiler is buying the farm
Punk politeness failed to charm
Preaching revolution, anarchy and change
Sucked from the system that had given him his name
And me, yes, I, do I want to burn?
Is there something I can learn?
Do I need a lab to build some stuff
Should I get a saw cut it out rough?
I see the velvet zippies with their cogs 'n gears
The social elite with goggles over their ears
I watch and understand that it don't mean a thing
The scorpions might attack, but the systems stole the sting
STEAMPUNK IS DEAD. STEAMPUNK IS DEAD. STEAMPUNK IS DEAD

The follow-up to that Giz article was covered in this post on SG, and the 'contest' produced some funny stuff. Whatever Giz declares dead is invariably alive & well, and more important, much more relevant than Giz. markf

I say let it die. Punk died, and look how well they did for it.
As they say "Punk rock's not dead!"
Besides, If steampunk dies we can just bring it back to life. Then we can go around saying
It lives! IT LIVES!! BWAA HAAHAA HAAA AAAAA HAAAA!!!

Re: Gizmodo: "Steampunk is dead"
You know they said all your base was dead but my 8 year old cousin wrote "all your base are belong to us" on one of those little electric transformer buildings but a few months ago.
My point: Some things never die, like the great cthulhu they live forever sleeping but dreaming new dreams!!!
Dead? Never! Not while I'm alive anyway, Mwahahahaha!

We're not dying. We are simply letting the fad folks think we are dead and move on. GIzmodo's statement probably won't affect any of us in the least.

Re: Gizmodo: "Steampunk is dead"
omg. It must be true. So true that the bandwidth on brassgoggles was stretched to its limits more than ever resently. Cause dead things cause bandwidth struggles. And the internet is always right.
Though probably, it will only cause MORE people to look into steampunk. Nothing says 'I like to be different' to someone outside social norms than picking up on a 'dying' fad.
and to me, Gizmondo only seems to see it as an art of decorating items anyway. Which shows their research team is lame and copped out on their recent posts by having a photoshop contest. Why actually do any blogging when you can just throw up a random photoshop contest and call it a day.

Re: Gizmodo: "Steampunk is dead"
Steampunks not dead. People who say that are just selfish and unimaginable who don't want to share "their" scene with anyone else, nor can they see far enough to do more with what they are apart of. Instead they declare it dead or too mainstream and move on instead of expanding and doing more to make it more and more unique!

Of course it's dead. Who would want to use leather and wood that is still living? Just imagine the difficulty in keeping your goggles on if the straps were constantly mooing at you!

Re: Gizmodo: "Steampunk is dead"
Well, I for one hope that it stays off the radar because when it goes mainstream, it becomes the faire for morons.
I for one truly love it, because of how much fun it is to create things that nobody else has, not to mention, creating things that are actually better than what you pay for in stores. I'd rather make something myself than buy it.
Especially when it's things that I want to last a lifetime.
Then there's the whole corset thing. So long as there are corsets, steampunk will remain very much alive.

Found something along those lines too...

These guys are starting to sound like "tween" girls, with their next-big-thing-made-to-die-and-be-replaced-by-the-next-big-thing, only with the voltage source connected backwards so their (not so) big things have to be discarded as soon as they become cool.
How to rebel by dropping your rebellion the instant someone else starts rebelling the same way. How do these guys think they're going to get a game in?

Re: Gizmodo: "Steampunk is dead"
Fashion is now, style is forever.
Steampunk could go mainstream and there would be those who embrace it as the latest "In" thing and then aptly drop it when the next latest/greatest thing comes around and then there will be those of us who just keep going on because we didn't need anyone to tell us it was cool in the first place.
Steampunk is dead...
Steampunk is NOT dead. Steampunk is LIFE!

You can declare VHS dead or CRT monitors dead, because those are commercial products and they have a lifespan.
SteamPunk is art. Declaring it dead is the same as declaring Classic painting dead. Or impressionism dead. Art can not be dead.
I can as well declare Gizmodo dead, because I will not come to this site anymore. Same kind of declaration.
Well said!
Also as some pointed out in the comments on Gizmodo, Goth has supposedly been dead for years now, but it's not going away is it?
