What horrid steampunk names would you saddle your children with?
I like:
Antigone
Aranthra
Anathema
Laverna (goddess of thieves, but I'd really do this one)
Annis
Quinn or Quirke
Fagin
Garret
Aubrey
Oscar
Rickett
Langstrum
Alastor
Feel free to post cool character names as well.

Valeria and Orlando.
And there's ten points to the first person to tell me where I "borrowed" them from!

I truly do want to name a son Orpheus, and a daughter Anastasia.

Re: What horrid steampunk names would you saddle your children with?
By way of steampunk names, I'm rather fond of Jules for a boy (: Stereotypical, yes, but also stylish! And I'm a fan of very fancy girls' names - Samantha, Arlette, Maximillienne, etc...

It's a lovely name, but everyone will pronounce it "jewels," instead of "jewel."
Re: What horrid steampunk names would you saddle your children with?
I rather like Dorian. I had a feminine one the other week, but it seems to have escaped me.
Edwina is a fine name, but I am not sure I would give it to anyone.
Some of the Muses have very well selected names, while we're speaking about names from Mythology.

Re: What horrid steampunk names would you saddle your children with?
Very nice list you have there Anne.
What about Curiousity as a second name?
There may be something to be said for choosing names as if one were populating a Legion of Super Heroes, or other literery characters.

It's not really on-topic, but my lady and I have decided that Chlamydia would be a charming girl's name, were it not for its meaning

I must say that I agree whole heartedly, Sir Hudson... I do so enjoy names with some significance. My own name (James) is fine, I suppose. I was, unfortunately, vetoed when naming our son. I liked Horatio. My Wife liked Nathan. Guess what he's named.

I have heard that there really is a child somewhere named Chlamydia, I'm sure I didn't dream that.
My friend who worked for the registry office told me of an entry he had to make for a child named LaTrine

It's already been done, as has Latrine, Labia, Clitoris, Vagina, Testicles, Syphilis, Shithead, Asshole, Nosmo King, Pubicky, Syringe, Marijuana and everything else you could possibly think of. I really do like Larceny as a girls name, though. It's pretty sounding.
Re: What horrid steampunk names would you saddle your children with?
The name we saddle any theoretical children with will be the least of the poor little blighters' problems.
When my goddaughter was born, I suggested "Lilith" & the mother eventually settled on "Lily", which is just right- unusual enough to hold it's own on a world of Apples, Bluebells, Jezabels etc but not so unusual it'll embaress the poor kid. Other than than, "Tyranny" is nice for a girl. As is "Lunacy". And "Henrietta". I like feminised versions of old boy's names, "Claudette" etc. For boys, there are some good biblical ones- "Leviticus" springs to mind. "Asmodeus" has a nice ring to it, too.
"Cryxxian Darragh Wrathe", "Gurvaldt Irusk" and "Servath Reznik" have been bounced around, but you have to draw the line somewhere. "Arlan Strangeways" might be a possibility.

I'm guessing that Valeria is taken from the Robert E. Howard canon, the Conan tales in particular.
Orlando...Le Chanson d'Roland?

Re: What horrid steampunk names would you saddle your children with?
It seems everyone in my (extended) family has either very traditional names (Henry William Jane etc.) or rather less common traditional names eg: mine which is Pádraig (try explaining that to your primary school teacher) or ones like Upha & Sobolevsky So I think I could get away with naming a child rather outlandishly
If I were to name a girl 'Olga' is definitely the name of choice, although I've always quite liked Kate as a name, but I'm not entirely sure why...
I think the best approach is to have a simple but interesting first name & then wonderfully elabourate middle names eg if I were to have a daughter: Olga Josephine
Antoinette Decadence Catherine Yeames Garner

I have always liked the name Nathaniel, and i believe my fiancee likes it too, so if we have a boy so it shall be.

Padraig is much cooler than Patrick, that's for sure. But do you yell at people who try to call you Paddy? I would.
And Mary, 'Lilith' really means demon. Supposedly Adam's evil first wife, the name literally translates to "female night being/demon." Not that that should discourage you from naming a child that.

Re: What horrid steampunk names would you saddle your children with?
I've always been fond of Malachi for a boy but wasn't allowed it. Seth Osric was as unusual as I was allowed to get, and even then I wasn't allowed to call his sister Elfine (guess what I was reading...).
Friends of ours recently had a little boy and named him Wolf; Wolfie to friends.

MaggotyAnne wrote:But do you yell at people who try to call you Paddy? I would.
I've rarely had people call me paddy, but in most cases doubt I'd yell at them- if it's in a paddy in a friendly way I give a "yep I've heard it before but its nice that you tryed" grin. on the other hand if it was in a more derogatory way- I believe that I'd say something to the effect of "yes I may have Irish blood, but I am Anglo-Irish, so if anyone is in a position to do the looking down its most certainly not you" exempt phrased in a far more amiable way as to leave the person a feeling bit spun around & silly, but without being confrontational :}
....However what I get called is the far more childish 'porridge' to which I respond with something along the lines of "yes how wonderful of you, but could you please stop -its rather tiresome"
Incidently my grandmother has a dog called Malachy (& used to have a dalmation called Seurat but thats a different matter altogether )
