New Leather Bag.
I had a request from another member to make a bag for them. So, I've decided to do it. I am using the same oilskin leather that I used on my journal for this bag. It's dimensions are 13"X10"X5", and will have 3 pockets on it, carrying strap, and hardware. I thought I would document the process as I went along.
I cut out all the parts for the bag.
I then trimmed them down, and put stitch grooves, and ran a stitch wheel over the grooves.
I will be gluing the pieces together this evening, after I've stitched up the corners on the pockets. Once the pockets are stitched on, then I will be gluing the side panels.
More pics to come!

Re: New Leather Bag.
Not to hijack your thread, but I was looking up carpet bags, and found this page....
"The Project Gutenberg EBook of Scientific American Supplement, No. 561,
October 2, 1886, by Various"
http://www.gutenberg.org/files/16360/16360-h/16360-h.htm
You have to scroll down to chapter 7 (VII) "USEFUL BAGS, AND HOW TO MAKE THEM"
Useful information, and a lot of other interesting stuff there....

Re: New Leather Bag.
Just stitched up the corners of the pockets, and have stitched one of the pockets to the front of the body of the bag. Pics coming in a bit after I get all three on.

Still useful and relevant information if you ask me...
In person I've found that most conversations digress in a natural flow. I find online digressions to be both natural and usually informative and useful.
Interesting to see the progress on the bag too.

Re: New Leather Bag.
I don't think it's polite to post links to other things unless asked to in someone else's thread. Especially when one has nothing to do with the other.
I've decided to just post updates to my blog and not post anything but the final picture of the bag in question. You can start your own thread on carpet bagging or whatever it is you like.

Gentlemen,
I'm sure no insult was intended and the contribution was intended as an aid to others reading the thread for their own inspiration.
It would be a shame if an apparently well intentioned post resulted in bad feeling, and
I for one would greatly appreciate further photographs of the work in progress.

Re: New Leather Bag.
Now I’m sorry that I posted anything.
As I posted above, I found an interesting article on making bags, from carpet, canvas and leather. Then I saw this thread showing step-by-step a leather bag being made.
If I wanted a thread on carpetbags, I would have started one. But I thought the information in the article was interesting and useful.
I can’t figure out how an article on making bags posted in a thread about making a bag would be considered off-topic.

I think, based on the traditions of the BG forums (and most others I have been associated with, for that matter), that you are quite correct.
I suspect the other admins will concur.
I have to admit I was slightly taken aback the first time I saw professordevlin chiding others for threadjacking in a previous thread, and again here. That's not the way it works here. People have always been free to add to a discussion just as you did. If it gets too far off-topic, and it certainly hasn't at this point, then a new thread would be in order.
professordevlin: If you wish to ensure your exclusive ownership of a thread, please make an explicit note of it in the Subject line. I'm sure the rest of us will honor your request.

Re: New Leather Bag.
Perhaps it's my overdeveloped sense of politeness that has prevented me from steering someone's thread away from a topic, let alone post links to other sites, and other people's works. I think it is rude to do that.
Like I stated before, I go out of my way not to do that to other people.
I know that if I were to post to another person's thread about their work, and showcase my own, or others it would be considered rude.
I'll keep my work to myself and just add inane commentary where it is asked for.

Whoa, when did brass goggles get nasty? I always liked this site as it was the only one which didnt have all the normal nasty stuff normally associated with the internet. This site is always very polite and is a refreshing change. The guy was only trying to help out, your bag looks very good and i'm sure people would like to see more of your work, the other embossed stuff looks great too.

Re: New Leather Bag.
Okay, I gotta chime in. Thread-jacking is something more akin to posting a Hello Kitty picture full of flowers in the middle of a discussion about guns. I can understand why one might find other people's desire to provide useful information to be maybe distracting somehow.
However, if one is going to find other member's comments on related topics to be rude, then post a link to your blog to direct people's attention there and don't bother starting a full-blown thread about your project here. People here tend to be interested in sharing, not owning. At least that's my take on it.

Re: New Leather Bag.
If I truly wanted help, I would have posted in the thread, Please Help.
If I come off as OWNING this thread, rather than Sharing, I wouldn't have been inclined to share my work with anyone.
If asking people to be polite is akin to being mean, or selfish, then it's just as well I not post ANYTHING to this forum, as I'm not interested in not being polite, and I'm certainly not interested in being treated rudely.

Re: New Leather Bag.
I take it professordevlin has left us.
All I can say is, he certainly had some odd notions as to what is polite and what is rude.
I suppose it must be the case that you can insult someone, or hurt someone's feelings, politely ...
But it doesn't make much sense to me ...

Re: New Leather Bag.
Oh Dear
I think we have had a failure of communication.
I suspect some may view a thread as akin to a lecture or tutorial, others as a conversation among peers.
The social etiquette is very different between the two, and I suspect this has been the cause of the presumed rudeness
If the moderators agree, would it be possible to include advice to this effect in the "forum rules"

Re: New Leather Bag.
Presumably this is indeed the cause of the confusion.
I presume that threads are conversations. Dialogues rather than monologues.
If I want to keep it as a monologue I would post on a website rather than a forum.
Perhaps clarity of this point would be worth posting.

Re: New Leather Bag.
It seems to me that pd (as I shall refer to him) must not have been familiar with the BG - what - ethos? - as it relates to forum etiquette.
Actually, I can't think where he learned his (to me) very odd notions as to how these things ought to work. I know there must be some very different forums out there from the ones I've ever participated in over the course of a lot of years, but still ...
I can't quite envision this most peculiar collection of attitudes coming from anywhere. In fact, I find myself at a loss for words ...

Re: New Leather Bag.
I think The Kernel's examination of the communication failure is spot on. I think it would be wise to warn new members that they should expect that this forum and Brass Goggles have a collaborative, friendly, and even wise-cracking tendency. I think it is unreasonable to expect that people are going to hold their tongues while someone is posting a series of steps in a tutorial (for example).
If a person wishes to post a tutorial, they should consider posting a link to a blog or a website, OR they should post the whole series of steps, from start to finish, at the same time. Some people may find it rude to have people chime in with ideas during their threads. But I think most of us here find it rude to be chided for wanting to participate.
And I have to add also, that if this forum begins to move toward being a place where people can't comment, chime in, provide related links, etc., then I (for one) will be moving back toward working by myself in the evil lair without interaction with others.

Ok, what the dickens?
Since when was it considered impolite to bring peoples attention to something of similar subject manner that may dictate abilities to creating their own manner of objects?
It's not like it was taking attention away from the original post.
People overreact far too much.

Re: New Leather Bag.
My ghast is rather flabbered by all of this.
On just about every other forum I'm on people treat threads like ongoing dialogues rather than lectures or talks. The couple that don't are very, very focussed on their subject matter; and also very quiet and not as vibrant. I had thought they were the odd ones, but if that isn't the case, then maybe some kind of warning to newcomers that we are a talkative bunch likely to chime in with things related to the original topic rather than stick rigidly to it.
