As in the "Late DentArthur Dent", perchance?
I never really clicked with "Mudd" from Star Trek (TOS), same problem with "Q" in TNG, pity really as "Q" was pretty central to some major plot lines!

Re: New Hitchhikers Book!
Agreed. DentArthurDent we view with sympathy for his ongoing trials and tribulations (and not a little envy for his fantastic adventures); The Doctor we view with envy for his fantastic adventures (and some occasional sympathy for his ongoing trials and tribulations.)
Harcourt Fenton Mudd's perpetual trainwreck of a life we view with morbid, unwilling fascination, compelled to watch and see whether, once he hits bottom, he will attempt to pull the crumbling walls (and his "friend," J. T. Kirk) down upon himself or simply pick up the shovel and begin digging a deeper pit...

Oh dear, I can't seem to form an opinion. I am in wild admiration of Mr Colfer, and I am sure he will construct a cracking good story for our delight, but.... but... but... but.... oooooh
