A wonderful piece of doggerel
I've just come out of a lecture which lasted three hours and which was so dull that I can barely remember it. One of my friends decided to pass the time (it was so dull she couldn't concentrate) by writing limericks. So this is the one she composed about me:
"There was a Victorian chap
Who wore a black bowler cap
He kept his watch on a chain
And walked with a cane
To give naughty children a whack!"

Not bad...but what's a 'bowler cap'? (apart from 'poetic licence')

Re: A wonderful piece of doggerel
It was necessary for the rhyme and I hadn't the heart to be pedantic about it. True, "hat" does kind of rhyme with "chap" but it's just not the same, as it then won't half-rhyme with "whack".
I'd much sooner have "chap" and "cap" than "hat" in the second line and "prat" or "tw@t" in the first
