What to Do with Mr. Underwood (suggestions a must!)
Hello and Good-Morning everyone~
I have just yesterday gotten a-hold of a 1920's era Underwood typewriter. My original plan was to destroy it in the name of science, and, more specifically, an attempt at the nefarious "keyboard mod".

(featured: an online example, mine is black-and-green, and just as clean!)
However, complications arose upon discovering that the Underwood in question is a very beautiful and nigh-functional mechanism. Here lies the riddle:
I am unsure I want to lug this 30-pounder around on my moves to keep as a dust-collecting corner curiosity.
I also will probably be unable and unwilling to afford professional repairs (really only oiling and the rare ribbon tapes) to make this a functional word-processor (though the prospect of handing in term papers typed from it IS delicious!).
I do, eventually, want formentioned nefarious "keyboard mod" and wonder on the prospects of finding a key-donor so perfectly cheap ($10!!!).
What to do, what to do? I have seen the complicated example of someone hardwiring such a typewriter into a modern keyboard chip, largely saving the original artifact, which would be perfect if not so painstaking and I not so ignorant.
Please shout out your ideas. The idea-auction begins: now.

Re: What to Do with Mr. Underwood (suggestions a must!)
Send it to me!
I have a desk it would look lovely on.
You want to keep it I know,
you could keep it and save up to do repairs or mod.
it would make a great piece of art, just remember to dust it.
I dont know sorry,
Good luck,
Dandelion

Look into my eyes.
Look deeply into my eyes.
You are feeling sleepy.
You are drifting into a gentle dream.
You are floating in a soft cloud of happiness and all is well with the world.
You don't want to destroy this beautiful object.
You want to treasure it, look after it, return it to fully working order.
You do not need to make it into a computor mod.
You want to wrap it up in a stout cardboard box, with brown paper and string and mail it to Dr. Quack.
Mail it to Dr. Quack.
Mail it to Dr. Quack.
Mail it to Dr. Quack.
These are not the droids you're looking for. Oooops!
Mail it to Dr. Quack.
Now when I snap my fingers you will wake up, refreshed and relaxed and go out and buy a stamp.

Well, I think that is a clear indication that Mr Underwood stays in one piece.
(I'd add my vote for you to sell it to me, but there are MANY people closer to you than I am!

Re: What to Do with Mr. Underwood (suggestions a must!)
I have (sort of) a nearly identicle Underwood. It lives happily at my older sister's house along with my Singer treadle sewing machine. Both marvelous contraptions have lived there since about 1993, which is a good thing as I would have hacked them to bits for parts by now.
(O.K., maybe not the singer, it was my Grandmother's). Suffice it to say that I can't tell you what to do with it, but if it doesn't speak to your soul then for the sake of all that is good in humankind sell or gift it to someone that would cherish it, like Mad Maxine.
I can't be trusted as I own one in protective custody.
Yep, I'd hack yours up in a heartbeat, scattering it's beautiful mechanical innards across a variety of projects.
Sorry, it's close to Halloween
.
Politely yours,
DB

Re: What to Do with Mr. Underwood (suggestions a must!)
This is just a thought, but if it is "nearly-functional" as you suggest, you might be able to get a good offer from a collector, and said collector might well have a few "scrappers" lying about, taking up valuable space...
