We Can't All be Airship Captains
Seems like most people's steamy-personas are all either sky pirates, mad scientists or gentleman and ladies. But the world can't function with these alone. I'd like to hear from those of you with more practical personas. Or at least more creative.
Mine's based on myself, an artist/writer with a penchant for traveling with pirates (acquiring passage by either paying her way, working, seducing captains, or some combination thereof) to gather material. Upper middle class background, daughter of a printmaker/professor. Doesn't get along too well with society types and doesn't have the best of reputations, but not a criminal by any means.

Well the one I use, unfortunately is a fellt Commander, but it is for the GPO, so I suppose he is a postman. He is also a Doctor which is useful. The rest of the time however, I just play myself.

True, we can't all be captains. That's why I'm the Commodore! It was either that or galley slave, and the Commodore eats better and has a bigger hat so a fairly easy pick.

Xenoanthropologist/explorer, born and raised on British Venus, more recently on Mars, but currently visiting maternal relatives in America so I can visit the Chicago World Fair. And also because I've been told that Earth's quite the charming planet, or at least much of it is, even though I've yet to figure out the social nuances of fitting into proper London or New York society....

I think you and I are in very different fictional universes...
It would actually make sense for yours to have ray guns. Mine? Not so much.
Re: We Can't All be Airship Captains
Airships? If God had meant us to fly he would have given us the tickets.
I don't believe in travel, it broadens the mind. A mind is like a good knife, you have to keep it sharp for it to be any use. You've never seen a broad knife have you?
I believe with the modern advances in communications like the electric telegraph the whole world can be within your reach from the comfort of your parlour. As such I am an academic, a tinkerer and above all a gentleman.

My dear lady, you see what comes of travelling. The Universe isn't fictional. It's a provable scientific fact.

I do happen to own a raygun. However, in most cases I prefer my trusty Winchester. Either that, or a well-aimed hatpin.

And yes, I happen to share my life with a man who grew up on a steady diet of Burroughs, poor dear! Therefore, my steampunkly tastes tend to be rather warped towards the fantastic end of the spectrum.

Re: We Can't All be Airship Captains
Ah, more explorers, tinkerers, and gentlemen...
The engineers are a practical one, especially with all this gagetry around, but do we have any steampunk butchers, bakers, candlestick makers, printers, teachers, factory workers, tanners, fishermen, merchants, stockbrokers, lawyers?
There are certainly people on here with great skill in making clothes and the like, but does anyone actually take on the persona of tailors, cobblers, and milliners? And why not?
I'm still a rebellious youth, I'll eventually stop traveling and settle down to be a jeweler, most likely.
(and my steampunk world is more likely to lean toward fantasy than toward scifi)

Re: We Can't All be Airship Captains
My alternate persona is that of a boarding-house proprietress in a frontier town. That is, when I'm not being a governess, or a lady doctor striving to gain acceptance (not to mention patients!) in a male-dominated world....
Yes, I do visit the real world occasionally, but not nearly as often as I ought.

Silver smith, paleontologist, naturalist, mechanic, tinkerer, field engineer, cook, tailor, artist, gardener, and novice philosopher. I think that sums it up for me.

Now that would be cool!

Somewhere, I've got a pencil sketch of a time travel device I'd like to build someday, when I get the right parts for it and have more know-how on how to build spiffy metal stuff. So many fun ideas; so little time....

Re: We Can't All be Airship Captains
My persona is a teacher, well a professor. He's one of those academics of somewhat dubious reputation, bouncing around from university to university as a guest lecturer, when he's not off on one of the archeological expeditions that provide the bulk of his lecture material. Of course, he's also been known to hire on with pirates and other disreputable folk on treasure hunts, and shadier missions from time to time. After all, historians can be invaluable to those seeking treasure or ancient knowledge.

I have a couple of friends who built a time machine in their dorm room. Not a steampunk one but still damn cool. They rigged up all these random electronic things they found in the trash to this complicated series of controls that the person trying it had to operate. Lights would turn on, things would start spinning, sounds would play one by one as you followed the instructions. Unfortunately at the time of my attempted test drive, one of the bits in the sequence wasn't operational, so my voyage was unsuccessful.

=D I actually have half built my machine...I just need to attach the water/steam tank, a light bulb, and figure out how to make the copper tubing stick together. (Hot glue fails, solder is too weak, and welding is too expensive.)

Re: We Can't All be Airship Captains
So far, my alter ego has been an airship pirate (a decoy, not the Captain), a prisoner doing hard labor, a sailor on a naval vessel, and the assistant to a mad scientist. Who knows what new menial labor jobs lie ahead of him?
Re: We Can't All be Airship Captains
The steampunk persona I occupy would be that of a Teacher, primary (As I'm studying to be in real life), with a side interest in mechanical makings and inventing. I also contribute a fair amount to musical interest, and music can take you anywhere...
