More new goggles
I came across these beauties yesterday http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=190250671208&ssPageName=STRK:MEWN:IT&ih=009
and spotted on the close up photo that it appears to be brass or copper under the lens holders.
Of course I had to buy them, now all I need is to wait for them to arrive and grab me some leather. This goggle buying is starting to become some what of a bad habbit of mine.

As we discussed at SalonCon2008...you don't have to have goggles to be S.P.pocalypse wrote:i can hardly call myself a steampunk.

Re: More new goggles
Agreed, Captain Zaphod. Who else here has seen the comic strip on the Letters page of SPM two?
Re: More new goggles
My new goggles arrived today.
Little bit of cleaning revealed brass.
Giving them a rather aged look that I like.

Oh, can I ask what you used to shine them up with? ( Only I have a pair that might shine up a bit too, and Silvo didn't work)

Re: More new goggles
theres isnt a new "definitive goggles thread" is there? bummer, this will have to do since I have a fear of starting new topics.
my latest pair of goggles....... I still havent made a pair with a proper head band or nose bridge. this is actually the only one of the... 5? pairs ive made that has a nose bridge at all. its a couple pieces of small spring with 16 awg wire in the center to keep the shape and theyre held to the goggles with epoxy. drilled 2 holes on each goggle where i put the remaining wire out of core of the spring. but... the epoxy is brittle, go figure. it works, but goggles are probably not a good things to make fragile, so im gonna pop the epoxy off and scrounge up some leather if I can find any and pop-rivet it on.
for those who havent seen the other goggles, the outer goggle is made from 2" (50mm ish) copper pipe and the inner goggle (which is need to make longer ones of) is made out of some thrown away roller bars from a friends jeep. i have no idea what the pipe size. whatever barely fits inside a 2" pipe.

Re: More new goggles
I have considered getting goggles...but can't seem to find the right pair...
I'd like a pair that are not only nice looking, but practical as well, in case I decide to do any projects.
Any recommendations of which type and where to buy?

Re: More new goggles
I recently got a pair made by Nicolas who runs Atome Fabrik* which I'm very happy with. I have a spare pair of clear lenses for when I'm working with sparky things.
Beautifully made, quality things they are, too.
Otherwise the Girl Genius crew sell basic sorts, ebay is replete with lovely antique ones.
If you really want the perfect pair for you, though, making your own is your best option by far.
What kind of a look are you after? And what features?
Admirable pair you have there, Sneath. I especially like the shape you've cut the outer pipe in. The escutcheon element is quite nice too, and was the patina already like that?
I agree haertily with the idea of removing glue to replace with something sturdier.
*Will be posting pictures when I have access to a camera again.

Re: More new goggles
Good idea on making my own...perhaps I shall get some cheaper "transition" goggles while I work on some better ones...I'm rather a tactile beginner...am still working on my first project, a wooden/brass case to steampunk my iPod...
Well, we will see.

Re: More new goggles
the pattern on the copper part was traced from the key hole filagree on a dresser.
and the patina got put there from the acetylene torch I used. I like it, so i dont fix it up after annealing it, so all of my goggles look sorta crappy and old.

Crappy? No, I think the phrase you want is "well-used."

Re: More new goggles
i say "crappy" in an endearing sort of way. i think in steampunk (or diesel punk which im more in love with) dirt, rust, and worn looking things are beautiful in their own way.
