Wanted: Shrapnel guard

Wanted: Shrapnel guard
Greetings Ladies & gentlemen;
I've been looking for a shrapnel guard, for my pocket watch, but all I can find are ones that come with a vintage watch. Which are darn expensive.
Does anyone know where I can find, just the guard?
Thank you

Re: Wanted: Shrapnel guard
Just googled that, shrapnel guards are bloody brilliant! perhaps you could craft one from brass, get a brass curved bowl or ash trash and take a dremmel to it and sand paper and then lots of brasso

Re: Wanted: Shrapnel guard
Most likely you won't find one that will work with a goven watch. The guards were generally produced to fit specific modeles by the manufacturer. They need to be the correct diameter and curvature to fit the crystal, and the snap fit means that they would not usually fit anotehr watch, even of the diameter was close.
I've never seen any available in any of the watch supply house catalogs.
Best be would be to try and make one from thin sheet brass, and devise some form of clip on holdfast. Ideally, laser cutting would be the trick here..
Cheers
Harold

A thin piece of steel, a power drill, a few keyhole files, and some careful template making should be all you need to make one of those things.
I shall put it on my list of things to make. Right after 'suspenders', and right before 'handgonne'.

Re: Wanted: Shrapnel guard
Shrapnel/crystal guards are typically made for specific watch types as HAC said, but there are some 'universal' ones out there made to fit around the lugs of many types of wristwatches. There's one for sale on Ebay now;

I used this exact crystal guard for my wrist-mounted pocket watch project (see pix at Project #1 on the website below) and another one for my 'All in 1 pocket watch device' (Project #7). The Ebay overall cost was $16 USD for the cheaper of the two. markf

Mark,
Actually it was your design that inspired me to want this. I was searching for the wrong name on eBuy it seems. As I was searching for shrapnel guards, not crystal guards.
I emailed that seller to get the diameter for the guard; as I believe it may be easier to mod that one, for my pocket watch, then to start from scratch as J.J., Harold, and A.G.Morgan had considerately suggested suggested. I would prefer brass, but, I don't have access to a laser cutter.
If that eBuy seller comes back with an unsuitable size I will try the scratch method suggested by those mentioned previously.
Of course if he does present good news, I may need to go to that Instructables page on electroplating, in order to coat it in brass...
Thank you very much Gentlemen!
