Image contribution.

Post  Keithe on Thu Sep 18, 2008 3:25 am

I just created a possible header image for the forum and thought I would start a new thread to gather any images. I hope you like the image...click for the full size image.

OOh I rather like it -I won' be changing any images right now as I've got to go iin a matter of minutes, but I'm sure I will be able to use any images provided!
Also I can change the appearance of the forum icons, so if anyone feels like volunteering some... cat
(the same goes for smileys -if anyone has the tophatted ones from BG it would be most appreciated!)

I had an idea! If a few images were made for the header would it be possible to have them scroll through as you navigated, or be random for each visit... I hope thats understandable I'm very tired and words don't come together so easily;
What I mean is that for each time you went to a new page the header image would change to whichever was next in line or a random one Smile

I dredged up the "shocked" tophaticon –

I also have a couple new tophaticons, if I ever work up the ambition to finish them Embarassed

Yeah, that was the only tophatted icon I could find, too.

Nobody's come forward with the BG icons so far.

There's a tiny iconset out there with an airship, goggles, a raygun and some indecipherable items, but it's not useful for emoticons in any case.

I can't remember if BG had it or not.... but there is/was a green smiley (kinda being sick) that I have always liked.....

One of the flaws with post on the internet, or the written word, is that sometimes someone can't really tell if you are joking or serious.... so I like using the "smile"...the "shocked" or the "green sick" smiley just to let people know.......

Rats... I just checked the Pyrate Forums that I also play on, and neither of them have the green smiley anymore also.....

Ok I gave the icons for the forum heads a try but they were a bit big & I haven't yet got a reasonable program with which to resize them- sorry to ask you, but could someone resize them to correspond with this:

Cheers

goggle icons all added in as you can probably see

Yeah, I'll give it a whack. I'm a fairly dab hand at Daguerreoshoppe, even if I do say so.

PS: On this (Linux) machine at least, the new buttons seem to limit the width of the text column. I didn't notice a problem before, and am not certain it showed up on the Windows machine (both running FF2).

Re: Image contribution.

Post  OldProfessorBear on Fri Oct 17, 2008 4:53 am

Regrettably, I must report that these four buttons do not scale at all well. Even after increasing the contrast by 50%, they become essentially illegible when reduced in height to 27 pixels, as per the example. I also tried 25 pixels, the height of the buttons they replace, with virtually identical results.

They are definitely oversized as they stand, plus there is that odd column-narrowing effect, which shows up on this windows machine as well.

I think the problem with the scaling is due to the delicate thin strokes in the font used, primarily. There are probably other factors.

Tell you what, I'll see if I can come up with something similar that scales down more legibly. It will probably be a simpler design, of course.

Re: Image contribution.

Post  OldProfessorBear on Fri Oct 17, 2008 5:10 am

I discovered that the oversized buttons were also cropping pictures, and we've had complaints about that as it is, so I attempted to change them back to the stock buttons.

Since the examples all showed up in French, I had to guess (correctly) what the English versions of the buttons were named. But I'm not certain if they are in fact the ones that were there previously, not that it really matters.

Will see if I can come up with a useable substitute later.

I left the big buttons that aren't in the message bodies alone for now.
