Forum Colors

Post  OldProfessorBear on Wed Oct 15, 2008 11:12 pm

Forgive me, please. I could not resist tinkering a bit with the colors. I hope I haven't damaged any retinas!

Mainly, I changed the pastel orange to a sort of mellow gold/brass hue. I think there is a way of changing back to the exact settings Pheobsky made. I will look if anyone finds this scheme nasty.

Ummm... I haven't noticed any difference! Unless the posting box was a different colour... can't remember!

Anyway, it looks fine Smile (apart from the red banner *grumbles* Wink )

You've probably noticed I couldn't stop tinkering.

I'm sure you understand that.

I came back to it after a futile search for victorianesque emoticons.

Anyway, my latest fiasco involved picking up some of the coloration from the Olde Home Base, to the extent that was possible, given that it's mostly expired from Google's cache.

Now, I haven't seen any complaints so far, but I can't claim to be entirely satisfied with it.

So if you have any suggestions ...

Oh, and by the way, it looks like it should be simple to restore Pheobsky's scheme.

I can't really say how or why, but somehow this colourscheme seems a bit... modern? There's a lack of depth and texture to it, anyway.

The lack of texture and depth is most likely due to the limited amount of gradients available here as opposed to BG, which made makes extensive use of same.

No doubt, that's it exactly.

Still, given the price, I suppose we can't complain if Spare Goggles' æsthetics are a bit, um, spare...

Cheers for changing the banner colour, although I am inclined to have a slightly more cheery colour set in the rest of the forum, but we'll see what the general consensus is!
Also I think the forum may seem extra toned down to me as I've just learnt how to set my colours on my computer so they're all pinks subtle greens & yellows

Yeah ... I dunno ... I pulled many of the colors off of BG (incidentally, I managed to make screenshots of representative pages - about a year old - from the Internet Archive, to study the color scheme), but it is a bit on the quiet side.

On the other hand, unobtrusive can be good when it comes to user interfaces ...

I notice you figured out how to use some of the buttons that were contributed. I had about worked that out, but was reluctant to drop them in myself. One thing - I think they could stand to be shrunk slightly in size, because they look a bit oversized to me. And those, perhaps, wouldn't suffer from a tiny bit of brightening up and/or sharpening, either.

On the subject of SP emoticons, none were in evidence at all on the Internet Archive pages - just the standard sort. Wondering when they were adopted and whether it might still be possible to retrieve (some of) them from caches. Or work up our own.

Re: Forum Colors

Post  OldProfessorBear on Fri Oct 17, 2008 6:30 am

Incidentally, it's rather tricky trying to work with the colors, because it's not at all clear what color controls are attached to which visual objects (I hope that makes sense). There are a fair number of color controls, and the descriptions of what they change are inadequate, murky, unclear and even misleading.

There is supposed to be a help topic for the colors. It does not exist. So it's cut-and-try all the way, pretty much.

I suppose one could set up a mock forum and lay in colors in such a way that i would become clearer what is attached to what ...

Never mind, Professor Bear, the decor looks perfectly acceptable for a temporary home.

And I quite like the paisley background behind the goggle icon in the upper left corner. I think all members should be issued a long, fringed, silk scarf in that design. LOL

Yes ... but when I start tinkering, I have trouble letting go until I get it right.

*sigh*

Yeah, I've been wondering where Pheobsky got that paisley ...

I would love a scarf in that paisley, with plain dark green on the back - the very dark green that's on the ends of the green bits
