My wife's Cane...

Post  Zwack on Tue Sep 30, 2008 6:32 am

I've been planning a cane for my wife for about a week. I found a nice wooden ball for the top, but she said she would rather have an antler... I didn't find one until this weekend (when I found a whole pile of moose antlers, one white tail deer antler) and a corkscrew. We have now dismantled the corkscrew and intend to use the handle for the cane. The corkscrew was sold as "horn with a sterling silver cap" the rest of the corkscrew is steel, but the "horn" appears to actually be walrus tusk. The sterling silver cap is sterling silver and monogrammed. I haven't taken photos yet, but they will be added shortly. The handle will cost more than the rest of the cane but it's well worth it. She will have a truly unique cane.

And here is the handle of the corkscrew. The corkscrew itself was screwed into the hole in the tusk.

I think this is going to make a nice cane handle for my wife. I need to clean up the silver cap (it's marked "Sterling" and "118")

Getting there...

Post  Zwack on Fri Oct 03, 2008 11:44 pm

Shaped, Painted, and with the handle attached.

I've still got to add a silver band between the main part of the cane and the handle. Once that is done the turquoise in a silver mount (currently resting in place) will be mounted in the same spot.

The band will probably be air dry modelling clay with silver leaf on it. (I can't make a proper silver one myself, sorry).

The Turquoise in a sterling mount came from a ring that doesn't fit anyone in the house.

Well well. I was expectin gyou to put the silver end connected to the cane, and the curve of the horn would become the handle, but it is still nice.

The silver end is solid stirling silver, I didn't feel like damaging it. Where the handle is connected is where the corkscrew was connected. It doesn't have enough of a curve for the handle to work well the other way round, but it feels good like this.

Somebody check my usage, but I believe said cane is a "feteler" or "fetler" or "fettler"

I fear that my dyslexia is acting up on me again, but at least 'tis manifesting in an interesting form. When first I read this, I thought it said "My wife's Caine", leading me to wonder what she'd done with Able....

Look what I found online today...

A Cane handle...

It's yours for only $1,100

And it looks remarkably like the handle of my wife's cane... It's a Wild Boars Tusk!

To think I paid $30 for hers...

Re: My wife's Cane...

Yes, in the mix of Stuff... should probably be "Schtuph" with bells, whistles, and seraphim singing... that I found clearing my folks' house this year was a boar's tusk with sterling tip and monogrammed cap, a very fancy corkscrew. Having had the good sense to coordinate my Steampunk name with the family initial, I could conceivably convert this one.

Thank you for the inspiration; I don't drink - wine - so a corkscrew was a bit of a useless-but-pretty dust collector. I will take a look and see how it works out.

that's certainly a warthog tusk

Post  Keith_Beef on Sun Dec 07, 2008 7:15 am

I buy them for €4 to €6 a piece, dcepending on the size, quality and degree of polish.

I have four of them sitting in a drawer in the workshop at the moment. I intended to make up at least one of them into a corkscrew!

I looked up wild boar tusks and warthog tusks and frankly I wouldn't want to say which it is...

This is an older tusk of some kind of pig like creature... Smile

I can purchase a new warthog and silver corkscrew for $225... I still did good to get one for $30. Smile and my wife loves her cane.
