Is BG Down Again?

Can't get there via IE or Microsoft Edge as of 5:26 on 2/27/16.

Certainly looks that way, Mr. Bailey. I thought that the WiFi servers at my job were blocking the site, but that turned out not to be the case...

I only have Microsoft Edge and IE on the desktop and a slightly old tablet version of chrome on my pad, but I can't get there with any of those, so I assume it's down for a bit. I wonder what happened.

Playing Go online in the meantime.

Seems to me, Proteus (and all the Mods and Admins) does an awful lot for us without much praise for it all.

I totally agree, the Mods and Admin are gems. I do what I can to help and do subscribe monthly but you are indeed correct, I think sometimes we can take everything for granted.

Bless 'em all for the effort involved in keeping our little bit of the net alive and healthy.

So thats it? Only four of us are talking about it? I haven't received any messages in the form of emails, Twitter nor Facebook, and it looks like the BG Facebook page has been long closed? Did they get swallowed by the Langoliers?* 😁 Worse, I'm the only administrator around.

It might be possible that Proteus and/or the others are/is on holiday or some such and does not know about the problem yet. If some one here has access to their contact info outside of BG (I don't), it might be a good idea to give them a ring.

That is precisely the problem. I don't have any contact info on anyone in Brassgoggles outside of this forum and maybe the BG twitter account. The Facebook page doesn't seem to exist anymore.

Anyhow, I was able to contact Proteus, and he knows about the situation.

I didn't want to say anything, but I had just assumed that Proteus' opium den had been raided by the authorities, or perhaps Shanghai Jack had come for his money. 😁

I'd wager the small traffic comes from the small number who remember or know this place exists, mixed with the infrequent use making passwords and signing in a bit of a hassle for something most people expect will be the main site up again in the morning.

I'd likely not have signed back in and posted were I not currently dealing with health issues that render me house bound with cabin fever and haunted by my own mortality. Not exactly places I want to hang out by myself. So it's worth it for me to be able to connect with others.

Without Facebook, the most likely way to call the attention of members is nonexistent. A few Steampunks have a twitter account, and maybe by tweeting or messaging known members we could could direct people to Spare Goggles. The accounts are

But I doubt we'll accomplish anything that way. The only other way I can think of is to post messages on other groups ' Facebook pages.

I did that in 2014? When the brassgoggles.co.uk domain expired and we had to use Brassgoggles.org. I don't know the nature of this problem, but it's may not be the same as before.

It's still down at my end.

Ah, here's some familiar faces...

I know I haven't been on BG since sometime before Thanksgiving, but I was reminded of my absence recently by a PM from another member. When I went to log back in, I found the same empty space as everyone else.

Luckily, "Spare Goggles" came up in a Google search. Took me a bit to get logged in, 'though.

It sounds like the problem is close to being resolved, however. How long has it been down, then? A couple of weeks (the PM hit my inbox within the past two weeks or so, so I'm guessing the "downtime" began fairly recently.

I haven't been on FB for the same length of time I haven't been on BG, and I'd never visited BG on FB anyway. Does anyone actually use it/miss it? I remember some of our discussions at BG proper indicated it wasn't as useful as it could have been. Is it possible the disappearance of both are connected?

I'll keep popping in here to catch any updates, such as discovering when the site is back up, or to just catch up with how everyone's been doing.

In case I forget to mention it when BG is back up and running, I would like to suggest that Admins and Mods exchange e-mail addresses at the very least, the better to notify the proper personnel when something goes awry in the future.

Well, the Twitter account for BG is still up, although it hasn't been updated since February of 2015.

Apparently I've been off FB so long I can't remember my password... I'll have to see if I still have it written down somewhere. However, the page that came up without me having to log in looked more like one of those "interest" pages (with only six "Like"s) and not the actual group page. Correct me if I'm wrong, 'though.

While I was gone, was there ever any kind of consensus about reanimating the blog portion of the site? Notice of new blog posts might be the sort of thing to "tweet" and post to FB.

And certainly the fact that the site is back up and running should be tweeted.

I'm going to stay logged in to this site for the time being, but that doesn't necessarily mean I'm going to be looking at it constantly. So, if you reply to anything I've typed and I don't respond immediately, I'm not snubbing you, I'm just not in front of the computer at that moment.
