Yeah, we know.. its semi-broken...
Firewall is currently suspect, so...
Its being looked at - expect intermittent outages.
You know.. I've worked with high HP steam, and it was much more reliable..

Update:
Our provider tells us that as soon as the server pops online, thousands of connections are attempted at once. DDos??

Hopefully it isn't DDos. I don't realy think here is any place out there that hates us like that.

Re: Yeah, we know.. its semi-broken...
I have a feeling we are not going to see BG until they figure out what the deal with the with the apparent DDOS is...
If it is a DDOS attack, chances are it isn't aimed at us - more likely to be aimed at some other server on the same network branch as our server box. If it *is* aimed at us, it's not a very effective attack, I would guess a few dozen bot machines in a school / university somewhere (or someone can't afford a decent bot net!). Just enough to cause a few hicups but not enough to cause problems accessing the server. Maybe we pissed off a spam poster in Nigeria or something...
Hopefully it's something less and we get up and running soon.

Down completely ATM. A little Brasstech twitter box was there saying moving servers, back up in three hours.
I think I'm getting withdrawals.

Re: Yeah, we know.. its semi-broken...
New here. Trying to register at BG and I still have not received the confirmation e-mail. Anyone know how to get a hold of an admin to manually send registration? Thanks in advance!
Edit: I know there is apparently a DDoS attack of sorts going on. will wait for BG confirmation e-mail then.

I'm beginning to wonder if me logging in is what causes it to crash. Stupid, yes, I know, but still.

Re: Yeah, we know.. its semi-broken...
It was up for a little while around 3am or so EDT, then down again soon after. Just past noon now, been getting 'The connection to the server was reset while the page was loading.' errors ever since.
Updates:
From https://twitter.com/brasstech]proteus' Twitter:
1pm EDT: "Per our provider: “Firewall being crippled from the inside”; issue being worked."
3pm EDT: "Something funky on our network is crashing the Internet-facing switch and firewall… stay tuned."

If we could preserve BG as a searcheable archive, I would agree. I'm active on numerous forums, and BG is easily the buggiest of them all.. But then I suspect moving the forum would increase hsting costs, etc. accordingly..

Re: Yeah, we know.. its semi-broken...
Well, now the blog is down too. I was going to suggest that we get a link to Spare Goggles on the blog page, just below the regular link to the forum; most people still don't know this is here.
If it comes back up while we are still having forum problems, could that be considered?
Cheers!
Chas.

Re: Yeah, we know.. its semi-broken...
On another forum I was part of (long long ago in a far off galaxy internet...) we often had similar problems with our host - mainly our forum produced a LOT of data and was bogging down a number of other servers so the host cut our connection... - so we came up with a solution based on a "fall over" server. Basic idea was when the main server went down, we could redirect the traffic to a backup server by pointing the URL at the new host server. The daily / incremental forum backups were used to increment the backup server's updates (and vice versa when the backup was used in place of the main forum). It was only good for extended outages, due to the time required for the DNS changeover (24 - 48 Hours), but it did prevent extended outages. A cheap hosting package could be used, as we would not be online long enough to exceeed the bandwith allowance (though we would probably make the server slow...).
One option we also looked at was a private server connected by a home DSL business connection, something similar could be done with someone who has a fast broadband connection. It would require 4 - 5Mbit minimum UPLOAD, not standard 1 up / 10 down home broadband - it would swamp it. Also the ISP involved would have to allow the use of servers - not all do. It may be worth looking at, it's cheap enough, not to hard to accomplish and would only be needed occasionally for a limited time. Any old computer hardware from the last 8 years should be good enough to handle the forum requirements. It's kludgy, but it would work.
In the end we set up our own private server with a company owned by one of the forum members, so we could allocate any amount of resources needed by our forum (mind you this was about 15 years ago...). Actually, it was the same guy I enquired with about hosting BG when we were moving from our first hosting company, but the wheels were set in motion to our second (and not the last) hosting company before I could arrage anything.
