Other steampunk forums
Desperate for my steampunk fix, I thought I'd have a looksee to find other forums to take the strain off here for a bit. The Lincoln Steampunk Society is one I'm on anyway http://lincssteampunk.informe.com/forum/ (please go and have a look, the more the merrier), but others are very few and far between while we wait patiently for BG to come back.
Thought I'd try the UK Steampunk Network. The initial page looks ok, but go on the forum and all you find is a collection of spam admails, with very few posts of a genuine steampunk focus. The mods and admins do nothing to clean the site up, and any complaints are brutally dealt with by removing the posts and deleting the accounts of the offending posters. Steampunk manners and ethics? By all means check it out, but don't expect any steampunk debate. However, if you want Nike Air, knock-off games, penis enlargements, or the services of an escort etc., stick around!
I apologise if this appears a flame attack, I invite you to take a look and make your own mind up. It is a shame, as the steampunk community continues to grow I personally feel that more forums would benefit us all, especially if our main site fails on us as has happened. Eggs and baskets sort of thing. But to take the steampunk name, and prostitute it on the alter of fast money, that is just not what we are about in my humble opinion. And if the mods/admin of UK Steampunk Network would like to reply to this post, either here or as a PM, I look forward to hearing from you.
In the meantime, I'll pull up a pew and stay here for the duration, thanks!

Re: Other steampunk forums
This "Nike Air" of which you speak- Is this some airship enhancement? Perhaps some device for gaining altitude without compromising speed? I shall need to research this further.
And "Penis Enlargements". Well I never. In the years that myself an my associates spent developing new technologies and cures for various ailments, this never once crossed our minds as being something worthy of any amount of energy expendature! Are you sure you read it correctly and that it wasn't simply an advertisment for pens with a greater capacity for holding ink? Now THAT would be something I'd be interested in. On arrival to the 21st Century, I purchased something called a "Biro Ball-Point Pen" and although it is cleaner and easier to use, it is quite inferior to use.
No, sir, I think I shall just sit here and await rescue. Stiff Upper Lip and all that, What?

Re: Other steampunk forums
The only forums I know of other than BG are the Gaslamp Bazaar (which has been closed indefinitely) and Ottens' Smoking Lounge. I think, seasickness or no, I'd rather sit in the lifeboat and await rescue.

Well, quite; at least we all know one another here, and we at least know how to pass the port...

I'm sorry to hear about your experience in UK fora, Major. I can't speak for that side of the Atlantic, but on this side I have found a few that don't fit such terrible mold. Granted, there is no substitute for BG, but I think we are doing very well locally at
http://texassteampunks.ning.com
and ever the new ones, (with much younger non-English speaking members at that!) at
http://steampunk.mexico-foro.com/forum.htm
Manners are contagious among the Steampunk, as the concept is universal across cultures and geography. I'm more optimistic about the fora overall.
Let me extend an invitation to browse around our humble abodes if you are so inclined, dear Ladies and Getlemen, if we can alleviate your withdrawal symptoms...
Yours truly,
J. Wilhelm

This is a fairly new forum that is in it's testing stages. Being an active member of the Steampunk Community here in Detroit, I was asked to make an account and try it out! It's a forum kind of along the lines of what The Steampunk Empire is like on Ning, of which I also belong.
While the scene here is growing, and new places continue to sprout up, I would still and have always attested to an elegant Venue for Steampunk's to hang out at. Thus far there is no Steampunk Exclusive club or bar here, but the forum can be the cyber version of that, no?

Re: Other steampunk forums
There is is also the Steampunk Empire which has a forum, though it's very...unsophisticated, I guess i would say, in contrast to BG. They are hashing out some stuff that was done on BG long ago.
It does have some other interesting features, like groups, and a chat (which makes a little noise when there's a message, just so you know you aren't go completely crazy when you hear it...).

Re: Other steampunk forums
I would also mention that http://www.dieselpunks.org/ is both a Steampunk and Dieselpunk forum. And there are quite a few Brassgoggles members on there.
