Air conditioned pith helmet
I have wondered how on earth our forebears coped in the tropics with their pith helmets, I've always baked when I've worn mine. So, I've taken a leaf out of the book the 501st boys use (http://www.501st.com/), and how they solve the problem of overheating in a stormtrooper helmet. I've bought a 12V 30mm PC fan and a small toggle switch, and am going to fit these in the top of the pith, along with the wiring, connectors and a 9V battery. Hopefully I'll have the Mk1 version ready for the weekend. Pics to follow.

Nicely done!
How does it affect the balance, though? I seem to have problems keeping mine on at times. Someone startled me the other day just after a horror film, and scared the pith off of me!
Cheers!

Re: Air conditioned pith helmet
I love the concept - but it is so discrete (and steampunk is anything but!).
Could you mount a brass whirlygig on the top of the pith helmet on the outside that spins?
(Scared the pith off of me - good one Captain Lyerly!)

Taking the pith
Of course the original old fashioned way to keep cool in a pith was to soak it in water which, as it evaporated, kept your head cool
