Re: From 'this', to...
Major,
I do think that this looks 1000% better than the original, but it does seem too much like monochrome.
By that i mean that some details should be of other hues rather that steel.
The handles and grips, for example, I think would look better in a wood effect paint and those disks that the barrels pass through possible in a bronze or brazen colour (greater heat conduction so helps the barrels cool).
Looking at the magazine, it looks like it has a texture similar to the wooden covers on a roll top desk, I would be tempted to paint this to highlight this look.
I'm thinking it would look better with a paint job that would bring a few other accents (brass, copper, wood, ivory) partly because this would make it look an expensive custom job, partly because if used well it would look as if the individual materials were matched for the job they need to cope with (high temp high pressure = steel, comfy and little external stress = wood, etc) and then partly because with your painting style I think it would become one hell of a focal point with a big WOW factor.
You obviously have very good painting skills, so why not transform it into a superb showcase of your talents.
Smilies not there for a purpose but there's a bigger selection than on BG so I had to use them
Yours Sincerely

Re: From 'this', to...
Thank you very much for the constructive feedback. I initially wanted to see what it would look like with a basic colour scheme, and as soon as I'd finished that I threw the photos on so people could see what it was and comment. I particularly like the ideas of the roll-top desk for the magazine (it also has a space begging to be filled with a gauge of sorts), and ivory inlays, particularly for the pistol grip. So, as a work in progress, it's time to steampunk it up now.
