Victorian Calling Cards?
thinking about getting some victorian calling cards made up.
do you think they have any place in steampunkery? and if so, why aren't we sending them around!

Re: Victorian Calling Cards?
I know there was a multi-page thread on this on BG, but here is my comment. I think Calling Cards have a place to an exent. The biggest issue is that most of us don't know each other well enough that a card with just your name on it is sufficent contact information. That being said, I do believe that something similiar would work much better. Even a calling card with a name and an email address would suffice.

Re: Victorian Calling Cards?
A calling card should not be the same as a business card, but I would have the minimal information that you want anyone to know on it. Anything else you can write on yourself when you are handing it out.
Decoration is at your personal whim, as is size...
Personally I would aim for something smaller than a standard business card with your name (or alias) and one piece of contact information whether it is an email address, a web site, an instant messenger name or a phone number...
Anything else can be added later. As for decoration, I personally would keep it minimal, perhaps a piece of decorative type, or just use a very nice engraved script like font...

Re: Victorian Calling Cards?
I'm thinking cards with name, alias(es) and email address would be more than useful at, for example, meetups. Fortunately, at the Waltham, MA meetup on Saturday, one of the museum staff was good enough to take a couple of group shots of us, the owner of the camera was good enough to upload them (and his other photos), and another participant was good enough to identify most of the people (and the odd man out id'ed himself).
Had this not been the case, I, for one, would have been almost entirely at sea as to who I had spent a most agreeable afternoon with! I'm not that good with names, and learning 10 or so new ones in a short span is nigh impossible for me.
In fact, I would go so far as to suggest we consider what I will call the neo-carte-de-visite. The NCDV would have on one side the individual's (suitably steamy) photograph, as well as their most commonly used avatar, with the names, noms, and addies on the reverse.
Who knows, they could even become collectors' items (as did the original CDVs of the Victorian era). But I am much more interested in their practical applications.

Re: Victorian Calling Cards?
The avatar thing would be very useful to me. I am the absolute worst at names but I can remember those little pictures quite well. I have a bunch of left over name cards from my graduation with a bit added on the back and maybe some prettying up of the front they would be very good calling cards. Now to find them in my jumble of a room.

Re: Victorian Calling Cards?
I really like the idea of the carte de visite. I already have personal calling cards, with my name and email address, which I take to meetups and give to new acquaintances. Unfortunately, I have not received any in return! I keep hoping it will catch on, as I'd love to start a collection.
Since I make my own cards in Photoshop and print them at Kinko's, I'm wondering about the technical aspects of making a carte de visite. Can they be produced by this method? How would one get them to be double-sided? I generally print out a sheet of cards, with eight on a sheet, and cut them out by hand (I do not use those perforated business-card sheets, just regular tinted cardstock).
Regards,
Mrs. S.

Re: Victorian Calling Cards?
For Dragoncon I used these (I purchased them from Staples):
http://www.gartnerstudios.com/skuDetail.cfm?sku=65609
(a pic of the same type in a different color that shows how they fold is at: http://www.gartnerstudios.com/skuDetail.cfm?sku=65682 )
I printed my persona's name so that it was in the correct location (John Doe area on the second link) on each of the cards. I then flipped the cards over and printed my email contact information. That way when I tore them apart (they are perforated) and folded them, my contact information was on the inside.
Too late to order them I found these as well:

Re: Victorian Calling Cards?
I have printed a template up using a fairly script like font and am intending on copying it onto thin card. Each sheet should produce around 20 cards, so one sheet will probably be sufficient at a time.
I'll add a photo once I've taken one.

Re: Victorian Calling Cards?
At one point, I had purchased a large quantity of cardstock and spent eight or ten hours over the span of several weeks making my own calling cards by hand. I find myself wishing that I had kept one now.

Re: Victorian Calling Cards?
Just curious; does anybody know what the standard size was for a carte d'visite? I believe they were a bit larger than current standard cards... ah. Google-fu... yeas, approximately 2.5 by 4 inches. I have a rather elegant silver (plate, sadly) cigarette case at home. Since nobody smokes cigarettes any more, I had wondered what to do with it; now I have the answer.
I will probably do up a formal photograph in uniform, pith helmet, goggles, etc. and my name with some expansive information. How to put in my "mundane" name and contact? Hmmm..... AH! I have the solution!
I hope this will meet with approval and achieve some widespread acceptance: simply at the bottom of your information, like a sig block on line, add your mundane name as your agent! viz:
What say?
Thanks!

Re: Victorian Calling Cards?
It sounds splendid. A slight break from the victorian, but it feels right, and that's all that matters to me. It's a shame that photogaphs would look so out of place, I find outfits so much more memorable than names!

Ah, but that would make it a Carte de Visite instead... which had photographs on them. Online exhibition

Re: Victorian Calling Cards?
I have a book , first published in 1891 on etiquette.
"The Well bred person's Book Of Etiquette" by George Routledge. Tempus publishing.
It mentions the etiquette of cards for Ladies as follows:
"It is not the fashion on the continent for unmarried ladies to affix any equivalent to the English "Miss" to their visiting cards. Emilie Dubois, or Katchen Clauss, is thought more simple and elegant than if preceded by Madamoiselle or Fraulein. Some English girls have of late adopted this good custom, and it would be well if it became general.
Autographic facsimilies for visiting cards are affectations in any persons but those who are personally remarkable for talent, and whose autographs, or facsimilies of them, would be prized as curiosities. A card bearing the autographic signature of Agnes Strickland or Mary Sommerville, though only a lithographic facsimilie, would have a certain interest; whereas the signature of Jane Smith would not only be valueless, but would make the owner ridiculus."
A fascinating little book.. Only a tenner or so from Waterstones and other reputable book emporiums.
Hope this is of some interest to you.

Re: Victorian Calling Cards?
I actually made some of my own, using nothing more sophisticated than photoshop and an appropriate font, and some fairly thick heavyweight paper.
If I recall correctly, I made them 3'' by 1.5'', with simply my name and BG by way of contact details the only pieces of information imparted. I wish now that i;d had the foresight to bring them to University with me.

Re: Victorian Calling Cards?
I have some maduncle cards made up with only one specail steampunkish word and a partial photo of one of my contraptions on one side...
...and my blogsite and home email address on the other side.
If anyone would like one for their collection (I have 400 left) - you can send a stamped self addressed envelope in another envelope addressed to:
~ maduncle ~
10 Sugar Gum Drive
Bundoora VIC 3083
Australia
And I am happy to receive cards from other folks (I do have a framed Herr Doktor card on display in a special locked room)
