Five Thoughts On The Popularity Of Steampunk - Article in Fantasy Magazine
I hope that this article by Stephen H. Segal published on 17 September 2008 in Fantasy Magazine has not already been discussed. My apologies if it has!

Re: Five Thoughts On The Popularity Of Steampunk - Article in Fantasy Magazine
Point 2 in particular has it down to a tee! (Although the spectacle would not be "frakking awesome", it would be "top hole" or perhaps "frakking splendid!" of course.)
On the whole, I like the peice & the author's take on it. Point 1 is certainly more accurate (though still generalised) than Caroline Sullivan's assertion that "The emphasis on gadgetry explains why so many steampeople are male" in her article "Tonight I'm gonna party like it's 1899"http://www.guardian.co.uk/music/2008/oct/17/popandrock2
I'll peruse the linked articles in the magazine when I have more time.

I thought the only part where he does miss the mark a bit, is the first paragraph, because it is so generalised.
And while it's certainly true that Steampunk is "Geekery the genders can share", it's far from unique in that respect - what about gadgetry, computers, SF, gaming, the internet...

Perhaps he has forgotten about the New Romantics!"Steampunk takes something stereotypically feminine that most boys hate - Victorian lace and frills..."

On Steampunk being more user friendly than Goth:
Very interesting article, thank you for sharing.
Whereas steampunks are — what? Weirdoes who take pocket-watches too seriously? What are they gonna do, vehemently tell you what time it is?

Yes, I've always thought that was basically wrong!Steamblast Mary wrote:...Caroline Sullivan's assertion that "The emphasis on gadgetry explains why so many steampeople are male" in her article "Tonight I'm gonna party like it's 1899"http://www.guardian.co.uk/music/2008/oct/17/popandrock2
And is she suggesting that in general, girls don't like gadgets?
Wrong again, I would have thought. The Gadget Show once said that half their viewers were women, and I don't think that could possibly be because they're all watching it with their guys!

Re: Five Thoughts On The Popularity Of Steampunk - Article in Fantasy Magazine
Some Portland Steampunks met up last night and the men were outnumbered by the women. I think that she is mistaken.
I would agree that it doesn't seem to be gender specific. Both my wife and I like the creative aspects of Steampunk. She gives me lots of ideas and advice on my projects. And if it wasn't for the carpal tunnel I'm sure she would make more projects herself. She does do most of the paint effects on mine for me as she is a way talented artist.

That's it, I'm emigrating to Portland. There's so much more going on there than there is over here.

Although I am a young person, I want to point out that I don't think that Steampunk is a subculture just for "young people" (As anyone on the forums can see.)
Point 6 should have been the age variety.

THE FUTURE: UR DOIN IT WRONG!
I liked that article. Short 'n' sweet, though I'm still not fully convinced as to why it's an equal draw to both genders.

Naturally, but can you generalize that statement? I think the assertion in the article is that Steampunk draws both genders because it includes elements that each gender (generally) enjoys individually. You might as well say that since pickles are good and grape jelly is good, that pickles with grape jelly is good. As we all know, the whole is more than the sum of its parts, and there's a special chemistry which makes it so.

Yes, I understand quite well that there is alot more to it all than those few things, I was being a bit stereotypical deliberately

Re: Five Thoughts On The Popularity Of Steampunk - Article in Fantasy Magazine
I wish yall would quit quoting that bit about the watches! Every time I had about quit giggling over that line while reading this thread, I would run across that quote and it would get me started up again! lol
Seriously though, that is a great article and humor aside, that was a very good point about how it seems "safer" to the mainstream than goth. While I have never met a goth that I would consider dangerous, outsiders seem to really be wary of us. (Yes, I do have a little gothic streak myself, and yes a preacher can be gothic! lol)
I would also like to concur with the young lad from Vancouver about the age variety of steampunk. This is truly an ageless subculture. (I do hate the term "subculture") Young and old and all between seem to be attracted to steampunk.

Of course! Others might not be quite as enlightened as us, however. I think it's an important characteristic of our little group here, that it's more than the superficial elements which make Steampunk great.JingleJoe wrote:Yes, I understand quite well that there is alot more to it all than those few things, I was being a bit stereotypical deliberately
And if you're serious about pickles and jelly, let's at least make it an Electric Pickle!

Re: Five Thoughts On The Popularity Of Steampunk - Article in Fantasy Magazine
As for finding it on the map it's easy. Look down the west coast of America until you find the Columbia (it's a really big river so it isn't too hard to find). Then go inland from the coast and the Columba goes east... until it turns south... then it turns east again. Portland is on that second bend.
A lot of the countryside around here reminds me of the Borders... but then I would say that.
