Re: WHAT IS TAKING SO LONG
What actually has gone wrong? I know it doesn't work but who are we waiting on to fix it?
This is just as good as goggles but i do miss it none the less

It is a mystery.
Meanwhile, let's be as comfortable here as possible.
How can we make this place better?

Re: WHAT IS TAKING SO LONG
Stop shouting! it won't make it any better. Instead of complaining, (and in very bad English, to boot), why not simply take advantage of what is being offered here.T.Taylor the Third wrote:WHAT IS TAKING SO LONG I LOSE MY MIND WAITING
Is this forum that much worse than BG, to your mind (or the lack of one, seeing as it has beem lost)? The main difference I see between the old BG and Spare Goggles, is simply one of volume, and IMHO, a LOT of the traffic on the old BG was drivel and of no relevance to anything.

I haven't lost my mind — I made backups!
(Now, if I could just find those blasted tapes...)

Re: WHAT IS TAKING SO LONG
Once again I find myself agreeing with Mr. Clitheroe.
The nature of the steamy mind is to make the best of the situation that one finds oneself in. That we can reconvene in a new place when our previous outlet is (hopefully temporarally) denied us, shows the robustness of our calling. To endure our privation from BG will be character building and make us all better people. Let us continue to communicate using whatever means we have at our disposal. If some of it is drivel then so be it. The light heartedness of the banter on steampunk sites generally warms my heart. Most of our talk is uplifting, helpful, educational, witty and inclusive. Long may it continue, wherever it happens.

Ah, I found a set of brass keys over here, by the stack of newspapers to be recycled. Could those be it?Bryce A. Lynch wrote:DES, 3-DES, or AES? How large were your keys?Zwack wrote:Unfortunately mine are on LTO IV with encryption... but I've lost the encryption key.

Re: WHAT IS TAKING SO LONG
If so you'd better get to them quick, or they'll be jewellery before you know it.

Hear hear! that's the right approach- besides it should only be till some point in October- the end is in sight, we shall be back soon enough!
Re: WHAT IS TAKING SO LONG
I find it hard to imagine that performance issues, or losing and then replacing one's server/host company would take this long to rectify.
I quote from a chap I know in the IT business...
"If one of our clients was forced to wait up to a month to get their website/forum back online, we'd be paying them, under our contractual obligations.
We'd also (again under contractual obligations), find them a new server/host if we couldn't make good..and pay to relocate them.
Unless...the host server went toes up...closed their doors...and were uncontactable...then you've got a real problem...because they've got all your stuff.
And it does happen."
Cheery information to be sure.

Re: WHAT IS TAKING SO LONG
I'm pretty sure the problem was that the BG site was exceeding their alloted bandwidth. It's not that the hosting company couldn't handle it, its that we were using more than we were allowed. I imagine it's taking a while since they have to now find a new hosting company, and arrange a switch. That'll involve downloading all the posts images and etc from the old BG server and uploading them to a new server. Being that 1. I'm pretty sure no one gets paid to do BG, they're probably doing it in their spare time, and I doubt it's the very top priority in anyones book (paying the rent seems like a more pressing issue), and 2. I'm pretty sure there's an immense amount of data involved in all the post archives and blog archives which will take a good bit of time to download and upload again.
Patience is key. All things with time.

Re: WHAT IS TAKING SO LONG
If bandwidth were the issue, one traditionally institutes a fundraiser (art auction!) and buys the next-up hosting package. Moving to another host isn't usually necessary because they're an absolute bear.

Re: WHAT IS TAKING SO LONG
Nah...data transfer's not a problem.
The amount of data on BG is tiny compared to what big companies transfer eveyday.
If cost is a problem for the generous people who fund BG...just start a thread asking for site donations and where to make it payable.
I'm happy to send them some money.
I'm sure most BG forum members would be.
Cheers: Jaq.

what is taking so long
Greeting all
I feel a bit strange about this, brassgoggles is down, here we all are, having been welcomed on this site and yet we all want bg back, almost as though we are just using this site, like "oh well this will do in the meantime" and then off we'll go and goodbye spare goggles. I suppose we'll end up with two sites??
regards and very grateful to sparegoggles

Yup thats pretty much what the situation is
Re: WHAT IS TAKING SO LONG
Unless we can, perhaps, fill some need other than being a place to assemble when the big guy is down.

Re: WHAT IS TAKING SO LONG
it wasn't bandwidth that was the problem.
there was a notice not so long ago (can't find it now).. something about BG was using more and more CPU time on the Server until the hosting firm shut it off.
these are the performance issues they've been hunting I suppose.
