Creating an archive of posts?

Post  Miss Gaslight on Sun Sep 14, 2008 7:16 pm

So what I have realised durning this outage is that I realy want to make back up copies of the various rp threads I am involved in. I want this both for my own personal reading pleasure and as a way to continue the game should the worst happen and bg wander off again. I know I can cut and paste in to a word document but I was looking for a way that would keep most of the formatting intact. That way I can tell who said what and when. Any one have tips or tricks on how to do that?

That sounds like a splendid idea. I haven't got any tips myself, but I think OldProfessorBear was working on a way to archive threads for the wiki...

Could this possibly be a way to salvage Steam London? BG picked the worst time to crash...this is like how they end T.V. episodes with a cliffhanger...then you have to wait a week.... Mad

Yes and the sad thing is I do have a archive of posts from there but they all happen to be my own. It is all in a notepad file that is topping out at 265 kb. (not counting some of the early Nate posts which have their own document.) See I could post my last post and we could work from there but there would be no other refrences as to what is going on.

A website ripper sounds like the way to go. Basically it makes a copy of the entire website, or selected section and subsections / links, and then saves this on your hardrive in your computer. when you open any page, it will load in IE / Firefox just as it did on the internet, and all the links, pictures, formatting, etc, are preserved as they appear on the real website.

This tool can be used to mirror a forum (either whole or in part - depends on the scan rules you set):

http://www.httrack.com/

Or if any Linux users out there care to help out, you can use wget with the mirror option set.

That sounds just like what I would need. Is there anyway to take that information and post it somwhere else? I am not very teck savvy just to warn you.

Ironically my last post was a suggestion for a summary of the plot of the Boheme story for new players....though I doubt that would have helped us much here.

We could try to make one for the wiki the one I have posted there is very old. Having someone to help me with that will make it feel like less of a huge thing to do.

It's doable, but a little more complicated. If you wish to repost the entire thread on another forum, it would be easier to give a copy to the Admin of the forum (they can then add it in manually). But it is also possible to use a tool such as a 'forum leecher' which sometimes support automatic repost to other forums (the exact same technique used by spammers...) - though that may pose it's own problems depending on the website / forum security settings.

All depends on what you want to do with the information you save, really. You could even copy the entire forum and mirror it on another server.

What I was thinking of is maybe having a back up of the current storyline here or some where else easy to access as an archive that is up dated on maybe a weekly basis.(Or sooner if we need it.) That way if bg wanders off for a while the game can pick back up with a minimum of fuss and I would have my own copy for reading whenever I want.

True. It was a bit too labor-intensive for my liking, but worked fairly well for the most part. Unfortunately, there was often a fair amount of cleanup needed, especially WRT pictures and links.

It was also a bit of a task deciding what to convert and in what order. It wouldn't have been all that difficult to teach other people to do it, had there been any expressed interest, but I have no indication that there was any.

Right now, I am wishing I had just plowed through Tactile and added as many threads as I could to the Wiki, because there is much valuable information there that's currently inaccessible. Sad

So throught the lovely power of google I have been able to get some pages from the game in their entirety as far as I can tell. The problem is it stops around page 55 after the first jail brake right in the midde of the fight with Black so aside from stuff to read I don't think it is extremely useful.

Ah got it working now!

I see there is a Steam London page...all stuff long before my time.

Interesting wiki...needs a bit of work but could be a useful place to direct newcomers to Steam London if fleshed out a little.

Yah I made that only a few weeks after I joined up so it is missing a lot. I got discouraged because no one seemed interested in helping and it is a lot of information to process. So if you can help that would be realy good.

I'd be willing to help...but you would need to fill in Steam London at least up until where I jumped in...no knowledge of the times before.

Started by putting my ship in there.

I'd do some characters...but it's better if people do their own.

Well we could do only the most basic info and then when bg comes back ask the players to fill in what ever they want. That way the references in the summery would make a little more since and we woulden't be steping on any toes because they could just remove themselves later.

I know I have Patrick's players email and I have been thingking of writing him any way but I don't have any real way to contact the others. I will have to fix that when bg comes back up.

Ok so I ran the ripper suggested and managed to snag some pages before bg went down again. So the question I have now is how to get red of the broken pages and use the data I have. Any suggestions?

Re: Creating an archive of posts?

Post  OldProfessorBear on Fri Sep 19, 2008 5:05 am

Unfortunately, my method only works when BG is up, because it makes use of the "Print" feature. What this does is to generate a simpler layout which seems to include all the pages in a thread (I don't know what happens with humongous threads, though). Now, that gives me the ability to either grab the whole thing as displayed or as page source, or to feed the URL directly to the HTML-to-Wiki converter (which is here: http://diberri.dyndns.org/wikipedia/html2wiki/index.html). In any case, one then just copies the result to the clipboard and dumps it into the Wiki. However, some manual editing is necessary.

With BG down, you could feed each individual page or post to the converter via the clipboard, but I suspect the results will be unacceptable.

Of course, if you aren't looking to reproduce the entire thread, none of this is likely to be of use.

I am thinking we may eventually have to set up multiple Wikis (linked from a base Wiki), because there are probably limits to the total size of the database ... but that's a ways off, I think.
