Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland
This is off topic so.....
Found this by a happy mistake, and I thought I would share.

Re: Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland
I have split off the responses so far to a new topic:
https://sparegoggles.forumotion.net/miscellaneous-f11/a-list-of-useful-web-sites-for-period-sources-t245.htm
as this seemed to make more sense to me. On-topic followups of course should remain here..
I hope no one objects.

Re: Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland
Did you happen to mention Alice?
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1014759/
Johnny Depp as Dodgson/Carrol. Mia Wasikowska as Alice, but she seems to be very much "mutton dressed as lamb" for this role. Isn't Alice supposed to be about ten years old at the most? Mia looks every bit of 18, which she is at filming. Release is set for 2010.

I suspect we will just have to wait and see.
TB has produced some good work (and IMHO some absolute rubbish - its a matter of taste I suppose)
There was a darker side to "Alice in Wonderland", not least the sexual proclivities of the author (allegedley)

Re: Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland
I know TB had some good films,I liked charlie and the chocolate factory a lot, but I just think it will end up too dark, and become a PG13.
I at least hope he keeps the Duchess, the Mock Turtle, and the mouse.
It might not be so bad,I was upset I think mostly because of the casting, I can not stand Anne Hathaway, she is just too oh I don't know, I can't think of the word,I just can't stand her!

Re: Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland
I think that comes down to the quality of the acting, a good actor will make any role convincing regardless of their personality.
A mediocre actor, usually one who has succeeded primarily because of certain physical attributes is just "themselves" on screen and their personality will usually overwhelm the character. This may be both positive or negative, sadly it is usually negative.
There is a quote that I half remember (I believe attributed to Harrison Ford and relating to casting feedback he recieved after an unsuccessful audition, but please correct me if I'm wrong) allong the lines of "a great actor does not look like Harrison Ford playing a delivery man, he looks like a delivery man!"

If you like Alice in Wonderland you might check out The Looking Glass Wars by Frank Beddor http://www.lookingglasswars.com/home.html.
Its a very interesting take on Alice and has some interesting concepts for inventions that could be taken in a steamy way.

This is the first film based on the book,a strang film but it was made in 1903.
The Looking Glass Wars sounds good, I will have to look in to getting a copy.
cheers,

Re: Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland
The remains of the 1903 film and a lot of commentary are on a DVD of Alice from the British Film Institute. The main feature is Jonathan Miller's film from the 1960s which is brilliant. A cast of the best of British, from Sirs John Gielgud and Michael Horder through to a very young, undergraduate Eric Idle in the background. And the dream casting of gnarly Leo McKern as the Dutchess.
This one brings out the barking madness of the whole story brilliantly. Still available to buy...

Oh I love Millers version. I must get a new copy, I had it on VHS and it died.
I notice Matt Lucas is down for Tweedledum/dee in the TB version, good call.
Geraldine James is always a good turn as well.

Seriously?
Well, Lewis Carroll made friends with lots of prepubescent girls. He also took photographs and drew naked and semi-naked young girls. However there is no evidence that he ever did any more than look at/talk to/draw/photograph them.

OK,I went on wikipedia and it is all un sure what was going on,but one of the thing said:
So it is unknown if it is true.
shocking nontheless.

- Spoiler:
- Lebailly has endeavoured to set Dodgson's child-photography within the "Victorian Child Cult", which perceived child-nudity as essentially an expression of innocence. Lebailly claims that studies of child nudes were mainstream and fashionable in Dodgson's time and that most photographers, including Oscar Rejlander and Julia Margaret Cameron, made them as a matter of course. Lebailly continues that child nudes even appeared on Victorian Christmas cards — implying a very different social and aesthetic assessment of such material. Lebailly concludes that it has been an error of Dodgson's biographers to view his child-photography with 20th or 21st century eyes, and to have presented it as some form of personal idiosyncrasy, when it was in fact a response to a prevalent aesthetic and philosophical movement of the time
So it is unknown if it is true.
shocking nontheless.

Re: Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland
It is quite possible that he was following accepted artistic practice of the time, however viewing children as sexual objects was quite common and child prostitution was very common.
This is what prompted the sexual offences act (can't remember the date) which made sex with a girl below the age of 16 years against the law. This was primarily intended to supress prostitution so it was the man who commited the offence and hence the quirks that sex with a girl between 13 years and 16 years was legal if you married her!
Shocking to our modern tastes.
I suggest reading "The French Lieutentant's Woman" for a literary context.
