I propose that this thread be used to expand on ideas and theories for projects both real and hypothetical. Such as how a Death ray might actually work, designs for a new kind of airship propulsion, or ideas for the (perfectly legal) still you've always wanted to build.

For instance, I've recently come up with an idea for a magnesium lock, or mag lock, firearm. It's basically a Flint lock mechanism. Replacing the flint hammer with a steel one, and the frizzen and powder pan with a magnesium striker.
Thus when the hammer strikes the magnesium, it creates a large spark that ignites the main charge. This system would likely have the advantages of not having to prime the powder pan, and not having to replace the hammer as often as a flint would need.

Any thoughts?

I think that you might be thinking of ferrocesium, which is the "striking" component in a magnesium firestarter.
Magnesium on its own doesn't spark easily, whcih is why you have a ferrocesium rod that is used to strike sparks into the magensium shavings..
Magesium on its own doesn't spark easily.

Indeed, I did get the idea from magnesium fire starters.
So it would need a ferrocesium hammer head rather than a flint one.

I have this new theory about the Brontosaurus.

In the library of the Parsonage in Howarth there is a book compiled by the famous literary sisters which contains only those words which support the notion that the world is an unremmitingly romantic place, wherein comely bucolic country parsons daughters are caught up in unlikely whirlwind love affairs with attractive but unsuitable bastard sons of the local squire. Naturally, this leads to a great deal of hand wringing, stifled sobbing, wild hysterical flights across the moor in inadequate but cinematographically appealing attire, arguements with parents weilding riding crops, images of young ladies coughing forlornly into handkerchieves and then dying of consumption about three pages from the end.

The great thing about theories is that they are suseptable to modification as the knowledge base and social circumstances of the population develop.

The current edition supports the world view that everyone now lives in North London, works for a publishing company, is a member of an organic grocery box delivery scheme, has parents who live for the most part in Tuscany (and who hardly ever resort to the riding crop method of persuassion) and have unlikely love affairs that seem to drag on for ages with a commitment shy prat (although they are still a bit of a bastard) who doesn't seem to have a job but who nonetheless drives a fairly swish car (played inevitably by that drip "Whatsisname"). These people are never seen standing atop a rocky outcrop in their nightdress, but are more likely to be found eating a panchetta in some fair trade coffee shop while bemoaning the sad state of their lives to an old schoolfriend (Who also works for a publishing company/celebrity gossip magazine).
The worst aspect of the whole business is that they never have the decency to die of consumption three pages before the end. In fact they generally go on to write a sequel.

This theory replaces an older version which states that "The brontosaurus was thin at one end, much, much fatter in the middle and thin again at the other end."

I think what he was saying is that it wouldnt be quite functional unless you where striking sparks into magnesium shavings, so you would still need "powder" in a sense.
Although its entirely possible that I am incorrect.
