Musical groups that use older instruments.
I've been posting around today because I finally found one of my favorite songs online-
Through the Grass and Pines-second song here
I saw Phantom Buffalo a few years ago at a free show inside a parking complex, and I haven't found that song anywhere else since. I love how they use piano, organ, melodica, accordion, sitar, and other endangered instruments in many of their songs.
Also..."They Might Be Giants" use the accordion and other instruments-

Re: Musical groups that use older instruments.
Define "older instruments." Are we talking hurdy-gurdies? Hautboys? Crumhorns? Virginals? Lyres and psalteries? Am I showing my age here?

Re: Musical groups that use older instruments.
The older and less gimicky they are the more points you get:)
(Edit: I really just wanted to listen to some good music using instruments used in Victorian times and earlier... even piano if the song has an older feeling to it.)

I've trained off-and-on on what may be the steamiest musical instrument yet invented, the glass armonica. After all, 'tis the only instrument, to my (admittedly non-universal) knowledge, which can actually be operated with a steam engine!

Re: Musical groups that use older instruments.
A tad early to be steamy but Schelmish use all medieval instruments and rock like billy-o. With the added stay-loosening delight of being a collection of kilt wearing longhairs. I feel an attack of hysteria coming on...

Rondellus do Black Sabbath cover versions, in Latin in a sort-of Medieval/Gregorian Chant style.
Of course the group Gothic Voices used one or two kinds of primitive proto-bagpipes in their seminal recording "Feather on the Breath of God" where they used things called a "Symphony" and a "Reed Drone".

And therein lies the reason for the 'non-universal knowledge' statement. Memory of said instrument had completely escaped me.

I am most intrigued, Dr. Cross! Do you own such an instrument? I have heard of the glass armonica, but have never seen or heard one. Might you regale us with a performance at some point? Such a recital would be a lovely diversion for our next steampunk meetup!
PS - Hope to see you Friday!

Re: Musical groups that use older instruments.
I fear I'm not in possession of one. Unfortunately, they cost roughly six thousand dollars, and given that they are the size and general shape of a harpsichord, not very mobile even were I the owner of one.
On the other hand, I find it unlikely you've never heard one, as the somewhat eerie and somewhat high-pitched tones one hears in the Harry Potter theme music was played on one....
As for Friday, I fear I won't be able to attend. I'm apt to be en route to Pasco, Washington at that time. My apologies!

One of my favorite bands is the Asylum Street Spankers.
They're all acoustic.

Re: Musical groups that use older instruments.
I love obscure bands. Look up "The Old World" (Eastern Walk is a terrific album). They were a little hole in the wall type band from Missouri during the mid-ninety's. They did mostly acoustic stuff and they use a lot of odd old instruments as well including one of my favorites - the Balalaika
Hearing them sure reminds me of days gone by...
For something a little more recent... Type-O-Negative uses a LOT of strange instruments in their stuff

Re: Musical groups that use older instruments.
There was a band in the 60's-70's called Jethro Tull (named after a 19th Cen. British economist).
One tour they used a really nifty thingy called a portative pipe organ.

Really? I stopped listening to them after the first three albums, which tracks or albums are worth listening to of their later stuff?
Also any recordings made by David Munrow, who did much to popularise medieval and renaissance instruments in the 1970's and contributed to the soundtrack to the lavish TV programme about King Henry VIII.
And for true out there 'so wrong it's right' type music how about Jazz-Funk Bagpipe player Rufus Harley
Re: Musical groups that use older instruments.
Thanks for the suggestions some good finds there.
I was just watching an old XTC video and like the old timey musicians playing violin.-
Dear God
And this other TMBG song has accordian and wind instruments-
Birdhouse in your soul
