In future, can the sensitive types who are likely to be offended by the contributions of others please restrict themselves to using their leather for making footballs.
Then, when they get all huffy, they can take it and go home.

Re: New Leather Bag.
Professor Devlin,
If, by chance, you should look into see what's happened.
Please consider comeing back into the fold.
The points made about threads being open discussions of related topics of interest are perfectly true. If a subject captures the general consiousness of the forum, then some digression is only to be expected. I'm certain that no-one intended any disrespect and that the frivolous tone of some posts here only reflects the playful nature of our group as a whole.
From a personal point of view, I can say that any and all postings that document a project are welcome and looked foreward to, they are a fundamental part of what makes our art a worthwhile one. If we choose to approach communication in a light hearted way, then it in no way belitles the endeavour itself.
Makers with abilities such as yours are needed here.
I would ask you to reconsider.

Re: New Leather Bag.
Professor Devlin's abject rudeness in this thread left me with a rather bad feeling in my stomach. I had hoped Brass (and Spare) Goggles was a rare place where such things would not occur.
Re: New Leather Bag.
I must have read this whole thread about five times now......I still can't understand what he was so upset about.
I now see why so many other forums have the "delete account" option dissabled, and I've witnessed first hand why a number have also dissabled the "Edit post" options too (one clever chap replaced 4 years worth of his posts, with the word "cock" before he left.... Which made a total mess of the forum threads. ).
So whats the correct term for this now 'popular' action, Internetacide? Forumacide, Avataracide...??

Re: New Leather Bag.
Well if we are to have people who have the attitude of five year olds, then we should not have them at all. One must expect to have input from others. That is the whole purpose of making something public.

Indeed.
Let us make it so.

Re: New Leather Bag.
Should you still wish to contact Prof Devlin, he seems to still hang out here:
http://www.steampunkmagazine.com/forum/profile.php?mode=viewprofile&u=7935&sid=e5c6064f7e4bedf6d8fd3bbf06abc0da
... also shows his blog address. [Edit: ... which does not exist!]
(Incidentally, that forum has nearly 12,000 members, but the traffic is pretty low. I wonder what that means, if anything. I've not spent enough time in it to tell if the moderation is too heavy-handed, or what other reasons there might be ... )

Re: New Leather Bag.
I find Professor Devlin's actions understandable, in a way. I now know it's extremely rude, but at one time I could almost have done the exact same thing. The rule he bases his actions on is quite common and in certain places seems quite necessary. I find it easy and indeed natural to take a rule and assume it applies in all similar places. I also have a natural tendency to take rules very seriously indeed. In the past I have more than once hurt myself by forcing myself to stick to a rule which as far as I knew at the time was very important.
If I did all that with the off-topic rule I would be regularly subjecting myself to disappointment, daily feeling unable to give little snippets of information that weren't quite on topic but were too small for their own thread. Such disapointments add up over time, making for quite a bad feeling, but the impulse to associate with other human beings is still stronger. Needless to say, if someone then "rode roughshod" over the standard I was working so hard to keep I would blow up too!
Luckily for me, counterbalancing my propensity to tie myself up in rules is a strong rebellious streak. Some people need a whole lot more of that.

Re: New Leather Bag.
As to the Gaslamp Bazaar, Professor Bear, I have been known to post there occasionally, and I can assure you that there is no discomfort whatsoever created by the moderators (they're anarchists's, for sod's sakes...No chance of overzealous use of authority there), though...I'm not entirely sure why i don't go back often, in truth. The people are certainly nice enough, and I think it's pretty cool to have the ability to carry on a political discussion in the Steampunk community...I think it's in part something to do with community breeding community, something to do with there being so much going on over BG way (which is where I wind up getting my fix if I head there/here first), and perhaps a little to do with the spare colour-schme the forum is picked out in, if I had to guess.
A nice set of warm tones can do wonderful things for one's inclination to chat.
It's certainly a fine little forum there, mind you, and I'm yet to find a single fault with the connected magazine.
