A Question Concerning Stringed Instruments Empty A Question Concerning Stringed Instruments

Post  Mad Miss Holmes Mon Sep 29, 2008 7:58 am

I recently decided that I wanted to embellish my viola with decoupage (flowers cut from lovely old wallpaper), but I'm terrified that this might affect the sound adversely. If anyone here is familiar with the subject, I would greatly appreciate a Go Ahead, or possibly a Stop In The Name Of Stradivari!

Thanks in advance.

It would really depend on the finish of the instrument. The only time it would really affect the sound of the instrument, is if it were to change the make up of the wood it's made of.

Largely, most instruments do not change tone or pitch unless they are affected by humidity, and that can always be corrected. The only way I could see it changing the sound, would be if the layering were on really thick, as sometimes adhesives can be sound deadeners. Make sure whatever sealant you use, is the same or close to the finish your instrument already has.

Ah, I see. It's an old instrument, and the finish has almost entirely worn away, so I had intended to use a dark lacquer over the finished product and the body and scroll of the viola.

If the finish is already nearly worn away, strip the finish off completely, clean the surface of the wood, then seal it. Then apply your layers of flowers and then give it a nice coat of varnish, but brush it on, don't use the spray lacquer stuff.

I had to fix the finish on my cello once some years ago.

Ah! I'm quite partial to the cello, though I never had the time to learn it.

If you can find an older hand made style of varnish, such as a luthier might use, you may even improve the sound.
