Cravats and Such

Post  Zepherius on Wed Sep 24, 2008 1:46 pm

I don't believe I've ever actually turned an open question to the forum at large before, but I really am out of ideas.

In the ongoing difficulty of differentiating myself from the inconveniently shirt-and-waistcoated British Indie types, I'm looking to get one or two ascot collar shirts. The problem is, it would seem you really need to wear them with some kind of neck adornment, and so far all of the period ties I've seen have an air of either 'I'm getting married in the morning' or 'can I get ya another bourbon, Mr. Earp?'. I wondered about doing a necklace of some kind, but I'm not sure what would be appropriate. Any suggestions, examples, or just twatting me about the head for misinterpretation is welcome.

Some patterns for Cravats have already been posted if I remember correctly... But I suspect that those might be your "I'm getting married in the morning".

Might I suggest an open collar with a neckerchief instead? It doesn't look quite like either of your other comments, and it's not all that common these days (my dad used to wear one like this at times).

Other than that make a Cravat out of a particularly non wedding material or with non wedding decorations on it. Remember there is no set period for you to be period correct for.

If you are concerned about the comments of others then you're never going to be able to avoid them.

You may wish to go for what's known as a "Day Cravat" (May be similar to Zwack's suggestion)
Spoiler:
Very simply, it is a cravat worn underneath a shirt with the top(two) butons undone.

Pretty much the way I remember my dad wearing them. He used large silk square neckerchiefs.

Unfortunately his Edwardian dinner suit didn't fit me... So my sister nicked his stiff fronted shirts with the detachable collars... Sad

The open neck idea sounds quite good, actually. I really am open to anything, in all areas my steampunk is the sort usually tempered with other things, I'm just looking in this case for something unambiguously Pre-War antiquarian. I'll put cravat patterns on my list of things to find when BG's back.
