Wanted - Suggestions for a cane...

Re: Wanted - Suggestions for a cane...
Quick recap of what was actually discussed,...
I have purchased two tapered staffs (bo? jo? Idunno?) from Goodwill ($2.99 the pair) and a wooden paper towel holder with a knob on the end of the right size (also $2.99) in order to make a pair of canes.
I am looking for decoration ideas? I mentioned wire wrapping, leather wrapping, paint, stain and scorching of wood. And was looking for any other ideas...
The only reply so far was a suggestion to use a ball peen hammer head as the handle for the second one. Fortunately I have a hammer head just like that lying around (no shaft, just the head).
I was looking for ways of removing the Chrome plating from the hammer head too. At the very least I need to clean the rust off of it (it has spots of rust).
I'm tempted to take a dremel to it and follow it up with bluing solution. Thoughts?

Re: Wanted - Suggestions for a cane...
In my experience, a dremel can do anything... unless whatever you're doing breaks the dremel, then it can't do that.
Re: Wanted - Suggestions for a cane...
A good blueing makes everything better. If you use a dremel on it, be sure to polish it back up real well before blueing.

Re: Wanted - Suggestions for a cane...
Agreed.
If you know anyone with etching and/or plating equipment, or are prepared to set things up yourself and you attach your hammerhead to the positive bit instead of the negative bit (and a bit of something you don't mind putting the chrome onto to the negative) it should strip it fine, but careful dremelling will work too.
Depending on how much you want to feature the wood itself you could oil it.
A friend of mine has recently been experimenting with marine oil. You get your workpiece to whatever level of smoothness you want it and just polish the stuff in. If it's nice wood (gnarled, lined stuff works extremely well) it comes up lovely.

I've used Tru-oil and Boiled Linseed oil before on other things and it can give an absolutely wonderful finish. In this case the wood was a very light colour hard wood (I'd guess white oak, but I don't know) so the grain was almost invisible. I've applied a Walnut stain to it (it took three coats) and will probably finish it off with an acrylic varnish.
I've already cut it to length and shaped the end to give me a "peg" to fit in the hammer head and tapered it so that it looks right with the hammer on there. I'll start cleaning up the hammer head today and hopefully have it close enough to finished for photos before too long. I have the other end of the staff still in it's natural state so I can show you what the original colour was like. The second one is intact (but the finish has been sanded off) so you can see what the original staff was like.
I'll probably also add a small disk of leather to the bottom to make it less likely to slide.

Re: Wanted - Suggestions for a cane...
I'm almost done... I've added two light coloured inlaid bands (using "craft porcelain" an air dry polymer clay) they've got to be painted and the whole thing sealed but it should be done before too long... I'll post photos as soon as I'm done.

Re: Wanted - Suggestions for a cane...
And here it is...
The one on the right is the new cane. It has a Blued steel ball peen hammer head, two light bands, an aluminium tip with a leather cap on it. The wood was stained with a walnut stain. The one on the left is the partner to the original martial arts staff that became this cane. That one will become a cane for my wife. We are still looking for something to make the handle from.
And here's a close up of the cane handle. The marks aren't so obvious in reality but are from the dremeling and polishing that I gave it to remove the chrome before applying the blueing agent. The light coloured band is painted "craft porcelain" that has had some leatherworking stamps impressed in it while still workable.
Thanks for the idea and encouragement.

Re: Wanted - Suggestions for a cane...
Perhaps a claw-hammer head for the missus? Or perhaps a small tomahawk?
The end result is mighty impressive. The dremel work is kinda rough, but it gives it a nice bit of pattern. What are you doing with the leftover staff?

Re: Wanted - Suggestions for a cane...
The leftover staff will become my wife's walking stick. She would like something natural for a handle, such as antler... But it's harder to source. Unfortunately the remainder of the staff is too short by the time a cane has been made out of part of it.
The dremel work is actually smooth to the touch, what you can see are some marks left by the polishing wheel that I hadn't noticed until I took the photo. They're a lot less visible under normal lighting conditions.
