How Gazongola can decorate his Leather suitcase... (and other generic leather decorating discussions)

Post  Zwack on Wed Sep 24, 2008 6:39 am

Greetings,

To avoid further hijack a different thread I figured that we could move the general topic of decorating leather over here...

There are many options...

Tooling (see the thread on this for a rough tutorial)
Embossing (see the BPRD leather thread for an example)
Painting (using acrylic paints works)
Stamping (either with pictorial stamps, or by using a single point to stamp a pattern in)
Pyrography (burning)
Moulding (wet moulding to a shape)
Cutting (filigree work)

And probably many more...

For the suitcase I would test in an inconspicuous area to see if your soldering iron will work. I'd also do this in a well ventilated area as the smell of burned hide might not be too pleasant.

Aye, practice on some scraps!
My soldering Iron works wonderfully to customize leather, smooth as a felt pen. Unfortunately for me, I don't draw well even with a pen, so my results were less than satisfactory. I subsequently made sure to have plenty of "practice material" on hand, or to print off stencils from the internet to trace over with the iron. Ive had much better results with the latter.
