Re: We Can't All be Airship Captains

Post  Lady Penelope on Tue Oct 14, 2008 5:10 am

My alternate persona is that of a boarding-house proprietress in a frontier town. That is, when I'm not being a governess, or a lady doctor striving to gain acceptance (not to mention patients!) in a male-dominated world....

Yes, I do visit the real world occasionally, but not nearly as often as I ought. Laughing

Silver smith, paleontologist, naturalist, mechanic, tinkerer, field engineer, cook, tailor, artist, gardener, and novice philosopher. I think that sums it up for me.

Cryptozoobotanist. A time traveling studier of extinct and occasionally mythical plants and animals.

Now that would be cool! Very Happy

Somewhere, I've got a pencil sketch of a time travel device I'd like to build someday, when I get the right parts for it and have more know-how on how to build spiffy metal stuff. So many fun ideas; so little time....

My persona is a teacher, well a professor. He's one of those academics of somewhat dubious reputation, bouncing around from university to university as a guest lecturer, when he's not off on one of the archeological expeditions that provide the bulk of his lecture material. Of course, he's also been known to hire on with pirates and other disreputable folk on treasure hunts, and shadier missions from time to time. After all, historians can be invaluable to those seeking treasure or ancient knowledge.

I have a couple of friends who built a time machine in their dorm room. Not a steampunk one but still damn cool. They rigged up all these random electronic things they found in the trash to this complicated series of controls that the person trying it had to operate. Lights would turn on, things would start spinning, sounds would play one by one as you followed the instructions. Unfortunately at the time of my attempted test drive, one of the bits in the sequence wasn't operational, so my voyage was unsuccessful.

=D I actually have half built my machine...I just need to attach the water/steam tank, a light bulb, and figure out how to make the copper tubing stick together. (Hot glue fails, solder is too weak, and welding is too expensive.)

So far, my alter ego has been an airship pirate (a decoy, not the Captain), a prisoner doing hard labor, a sailor on a naval vessel, and the assistant to a mad scientist. Who knows what new menial labor jobs lie ahead of him?

Post  Mr Clockwork on Tue Oct 14, 2008 9:17 am

The steampunk persona I occupy would be that of a Teacher, primary (As I'm studying to be in real life), with a side interest in mechanical makings and inventing. I also contribute a fair amount to musical interest, and music can take you anywhere...

Time travel device? Try a bottle of absinthe. You drink it, then when you wake up- presto! It's next Tuesday.

My character is the engineer on the airship Aurora Adeamus, tinkering, tightening, shovelling coal, clinker and ash, sporting a layer of grease and soot. None of this ladylike froo-froo for me (unless I feel like it).

I'm not Captain material. "Captain Mary, what are your orders?" "Um, I dunno... fetch me pancakes! Paint the envelope purple. Let's go look at Stingrays! More syrup on these pancakes, man, or I'll have you flayed."

KatarinaNavane wrote:Seems like most people's steamy-personas are all either sky pirates, mad scientists or gentleman and ladies. But the world can't function with these alone. I'd like to hear from those of you with more practical personas. Or at least more creative.

Mine's based on myself, an artist/writer with a penchant for traveling with pirates (acquiring passage by either paying her way, working, seducing captains, or some combination thereof) to gather material. Upper middle class background, daughter of a printmaker/professor. Doesn't get along too well with society types and doesn't have the best of reputations, but not a criminal by any means.

I suppose on of the appeals about the more fantastical engineering side, is that with a few mechanical minions, some monsterous machines & various other technalogical illiterations, a society can function without all the components you'd usualy associate with it... However a few more practical types always make it more interesting, after all someone needs to build them in the first place Surprised

I wonder what the sky pirates steal, since we don't seem to have any sky-merchant ships in the air. Maybe they just all steal the same treasure back and forth from eachother.
