City of Ember
I have been seeing trailers for this on TV, considering this means it has attracted my attention as i speed through the adverts using sky + (somewhat like TiVo, as far as i can tell) it means it looks pretty cool, from images alone, and the story seems pretty decent too.

I want to see it too! I wonder if The Lighthouse is showing it...

Re: City of Ember
Hmm, yes, I remember reading these some time before I discovered steampunk. Enjoyed the first one a lot; slightly dark, very original and didn't read like a kid's book.
I hope the film isn't aimed too much at children... but I suppose I shall see it whatever.

Re: City of Ember
Eagerly anticipating this one...I read it out loud to my protege (ex-almost-stepdaughter) as a way to pass long car trips and bus rides, and enjoyed it as much as she did. Hopefully it won't get the Journey-to-the-center of the earth treatment...

Re: City of Ember
We have to wait for the 1st of January for it to be released here in Australia, which is quite irritating.

Re: City of Ember
Not thrilled. The book was good, but looking at the trailer, it doesn't look like they're going to even attempt a close following of the plot. I'll probably still go though.

Re: City of Ember
I ventured out to the cinema today and saw the film. I must confess that I haven't read the book (unlike when I saw Golden Compass and was cursing many parts of the film as I rather loved the His Dark Materials books).
I found City of Ember to be pleasing visually and many concepts were also attractive, but then I have not read it. I was quite taken with some of the city design i.e. logos + emblems. It was obviously aimed at children, young teens I would have said.
Enjoyable, but not astounding, nicely steamy in many places.

Re: City of Ember
Just came on to say I reall liked this movie. It really took you in and made you feel like you were "there" in this underground steampunk Hogwarts castle full of pipes and lights that keep going out. Then a plot begins to play out in front of you, and for me, it was involving, I felt like I was with them as they went this way and that attempting to solve the mystery of the city of Ember while time was running out and some nasty people tried to stop them.
I admit it had it's downsides, but that doesn't mean it wasn't the best movie I have seen this year. I even liked it better than Hellboy, believe it or not. (I thought Hellboy a bit overwhelming.)
