Forthcoming UK events and ideas
The original post seems to have gone walkabout- here's the gyst of it.
There's currently seven US-based Geographical posts and none for those of us here in the Bristish Isles! We can't let the New Worlders have all the fun now, can we?
So, confirmed and potential dates and venues for the future include:
~ http://www.svr.co.uk/, Kidderminster, West Mids. No set date yet so if interested, post here to say when's suitable and we'll go with majority. Possibility of going for one of the forthcoming special events, but promises to be a splendid day out at any point.
~ Steampunk Meet as part of the Whitby Gothic Weekend, 4.00pm, Saturday 1st November in Sherlock's. This is a splendid little venue but arrive early, indications are there's a lot of interest and seating will be at a premium, I suspect.
~ Visit to a Steam powered brewery, Oxfordshire. It's a brewery. And it's steam powered. It has to be done.
The plan is to post a poll so people can register when/what month is sitable for most people.
~ Suggestion of a Christmas meal, to blow away the festive blues. Sounds like a bally good idea to me, who's on board and where?

I also suggested you might like to try the Worth Valley railway if you're a bit further north...

For events around Christmas, Portsmouth is having a Victorian Christmas Festival
Clickety link
Might be fun to go to and get mistaken for staff.
edit: Definately in November, curious. Tickets are £12 for adults, Oldies and littluns £10. 10am - 6pm daily.

Re: Forthcoming UK events and ideas
I have been yearning for another meetup.
They all sound so lovely, though transport may hamper my troop from getting to a couple of them.
Portsmouth and Whitby sound like very interesting events, and the christmas dinner sounds marvelous.
Oxford is only round the corner from me too.

We could of course attempt to combine the two....

Not too keen on a Christmas do, myself, but up for more or less anything else. I'm less unwell at this time of year than I am in Summer, so it'll be good to get out. That and I want to show off my new suit.

Given a bit of notice I should like to attend a few of these! Also an excuse to amble down to Whitby is most welcome at thee moment as I'm about half way through Dracula & should like to see the place.

Re: Forthcoming UK events and ideas
How exciting. A further suggestion for the distant future: Nottingham's Wollaton park (a splendid estate, lovely old manor house and perfect spot for a picnic) has an industrial museum, and it runs the steam engines on the last sunday of each month.
I do believe if I don't see a handful of you in person before long, one of my valves will burst.

Re: Forthcoming UK events and ideas
Sorry I'm late, but all this talk of Christmas calls to mind that the Royal Borough of Richmond used to have Victorian Christmas fairs, but I can't find any mention of them online, perhaps Professor Fzzz might be able to help? Beyond that, there's the Dickensian Christmas in Rochester, the first weekend in December.
Beyond the imminent present, I'm still thinking about a Steam Convivial (SteamCon), an event at a hired venue where like mindedlunatics individuals could gather and share the joy! Though this will take a lot of planning, and would cost money.

Indeed and one of the priorities should be to source a reliable vendor of tea and absinthe.
All joking aside however I have been looking at the Steamcon webpages and was wondering what would have to happen to hold such and event here.

Re: Forthcoming UK events and ideas
Steam Convivial? As discussed at the Kew meet to general interest & approval? Can we have a masked ball on the Saturday night? Can we? Can we?
Re: Wollaton Park. This has been suggested before as it's a pleasant spot and Nottingham is an interesting city (but then I'm biased). I understand some people arranged a small-scale meet-up there in Spring. It's be an ideal spot for a picnic once summer ~you may have heard of the concept~ rolls around again. Otherwise, wait for it to snow then we can all make a spectical of ourselves sledging down the hill.
Steampunk tobogganing party, anyone?

Re: Forthcoming UK events and ideas
may i suggest at some point a visit to Brighton Sealife center as not only is it the finest example of Victorian architecture but a huge section of it is designed to look like the inside of The Nautilus!! Also a model of the Nautilus looks like its broken through the entrance wall and they also have this fun little childrens thing which is a ride on a victorian submarine!
the photo opportunities are unlimited!
plus of course they have some amazing marine life there including a loggerhead turtle and Uv reactive Moray Eel!
