I've got a sore throat

Post  Captain McCannon on Mon Sep 15, 2008 6:38 am

Yes, it's another "Cap McC's got a problem!" thread! Not as cool as queso dip, but this sore throat is preventing me from accessing abovesaid cheesy goodness...

I've got me a sore throat!

This is due to having too many Jolly Ranchers at a time when I went out canvassing.

Now my... whatever you call that thing... hangs at an unholy angle.

Uvula... No seriously...

Ummm, if it hasn't gone away yet then I would suggest some form of anesthetic lozenges for the pain. Chloraseptic or similar (Store brand are usually cheaper and just as effective). If it's really severe then look to see if there is any sign of inflammation or pus back there. If so you might want to consider visiting a health care provider. If the pain goes on for more than three days or is chronic then go see a healthcare provider.

I had a tickly cough this morning, it appears to have gone after I drank vast quantities of coffee all day.

In my personal experience, I've found that an inflamed uvula is generally caused either by allergies (I got one every time I went to Boy Scout camp for a couple of weeks, though we never did figure out what exactly I was allergic to), or by snoring while lying on my back!

Chloraseptic is indeed what I'd try, spray and/or lozenges. A little bit of ice to reduce the swelling (but not too much, as that could make it worse). Salt water gargle, if you don't have any chloraseptic.

If none of that helps pretty quickly, seek professional help.

Clearly you were allergic to boy scout camp. Laughing

May I recommend honey and cider vinegar, mixed and sipped. With a warm rum chaser to take the taste away.

I rather suspect you are correct about that ...

Or just the rum...works for me! Wink

Actually scotch whiskey works wonders (served neat, but sipped slowly), and good quality brandy / cognac, warmed slightly and sipped slowly, will help soothe the pain - and make you feel much better too. Smile

Even better a warm Whisky Mac with Ginger Wine. That brought a whole household of us back from the brink a few years ago. Mmmm...think I feel a cold coming on...

Thayer's Slippery Elm Lozenges are also quite effective, I've found. They're a Victorian medicinal, one which has changed only in the means of bottling in these past eleven decades, as they truly do work.

First cold of the season brewing here too. The silver lining is it's a wonderful excuse to consume disturbing volumes of vitamin-C enriched Vimto.

When I was in your dire straits, even if you may not be in them now since it's a month hence...

Lots of doses of cups of half-black tea, half-amaretto. Piping hot. Scald your bloody throat. Did me a treat.

Re: I've got a sore throat

Post  The V.A.P. on Sun Oct 19, 2008 4:06 am

Although your reply is probably rather late for Captain McCannon, I do appreciate the advice, as I am now plagued by a horrible sore throat. (Though not due to jolly ranchers or canvassing). I have attempted to combat it with unholy amounts of tylenol, but they appear to be less and less effective...I've had to take antibiotics, but they may not kick in for awhile...hopefully this will be alleviated by Wednesday as I have a concert to attend....and a flight the next day....

All apologizes if I have hijacked this thread into a general "sore throat" thread.

Right, you want a tablespoon of warm whiskey, about three of honey, some warm water, and some eucalyptus and lemon essential oils, three drops of each. That should do it. Store it in the fridge and take a teaspoon whenever you feel a bit dicky. Oh and make sure not to add too much liquid or it'll be too runny.
