It's so very un-steampunk but I have nowhere else to show this off and this is off topic and my favorite on-line comunity anyway Smile

After days of experimenting and hours of work toiling over a hot soldering iron I did it ... I made a gameboy with a backlight Very Happy
Here's a video of it being discovered Wink

I made two but the yellow one's backlight can't be turned on and off and technically the green one could preserve the battery indicator light but I butchered it around there too much so it no longer has a battery light Razz

Ahh, nice one (or two in this case...). Very Happy
I tried doing something similar years ago with mine, but didnt work out so good - I found the light was too dim, or the screen would only partly illuminate. Mind you LEDs have moved on since the early 90's..... Laughing

I just wish fixing my LCD monitors backlight was so simple, turns out I have a failed CCFL tube (four in total - 2 in top, 2 bottom) and my inverter refuses to work with only 3....AAAND to top it off the other three working tubes are nearing the end of their life too. DOH! Going to be expensive for four 19" widescreen CCFLs, plus the shipping (and likely hood of receiving a box of broken glass....and the RMA procedure for that...). Rolling Eyes

Going to try and run the existing lamps from a seperate inverter for now (if the inverter can handle the now very inefficient lamps loads), should last for a while longer at least. Failing that, I could do the same as the GameBoy LED backlight, about 60 white LEDs should at least get a useable image...should be cheaper than the new CCFLs too!

Why not just buy a whole new monitor? Razz
Pfft! What am I saying!? Fix it Very Happy perhaps you could just take off all the backing and put a regular lamp behind the screen Very Happy or a few rows of filament bulbs Cool

Thanks for the praise too Very Happy

You know, I was thinking of something along those lines myself.... I have to admit I'm REALLY tempted to go all-out steampunk on this thing and build an entirely new monitor, using only the LCD glass panel and controller (all currently seperated, and I've done this before - so easy enough). Problem is a steamy light source is likely to prove problematic for true colour rendition (a yellowish light is more than likely), and the brightness could be an issue too. The monitor needs to still be useable for games, video and daily use... scratch

The inverters I have do run the old CCFLs OK, but they are getting a little hotter than I feel comfortable with (cheap CCFL inverters have been known to burst into flames..). I Happen to have six 1watt Luxeon LEDs with wide angle optics, which may be usefully bright enough, but are likely to cause hotspots of light (would need far more to minimise this).

Garrrghhg! Decisions, decisions....!!

Ingenius, but back in my day, we didn't know what a 'backlight" was! You had to sit by a window on the appropriate side of the house, or just play Link's Awakening outside! In the SNOW! In 10 degrees below weather! Naked!

And don't get me started on battery life...
