Indeed...
Yes, I find that I can check the bits of Brass Goggles that interest me fairly quickly. I don't really care about yet another goggles build or ray gun build. So, I tend to pass over a lot of Tactile. Metaphysical seems to be mostly "My Angst about the name Steampunk". Geographical is now mostly non-local (most of the local stuff has moved to a yahoo group)...
It is too bad. There are still the occasional excellent posts, but it now seems to be a lot more hubbub and a lot less "Wow".
I'm probably just as guilty though...

Re: A thread to show that there is still a pulse of life in the forum....
I think I get somewhat daunted at the prospect of how monolithic a great deal of the threads are by the time I get to them.
It barely seems possible to keep track of anyone but the very regulars like Joe...
I love BG, and I'm glad it exists, but I may be starting to see where ElShoggotho was comming from with his splinter group.
There has to be a better way.
Maybe a greater ammount of sub-boards? Dedicating them to ever more specific topics wouldn't seem to be the way though.
The little collection of us who found this backup board when it was necessary had a very fine rapport, and doubtless will again if it ever comes to it, just by acting as the main board in minature. Something invitation-only smacks of the more unpleasant kind of exclusivity...I don't know at all how to handle it, I'm afraid.
My memory has just fired, however. I believe Sam Hughes, who writes for everything2.com and his own website qntm.org was working on a similar problem, in his IRC rooms. Possibly something to do with conversational redundancy...I don't recall the specifics, but he might have somehting to say on the subect of online communities. Hmmm. This bears some researching.

Re: A thread to show that there is still a pulse of life in the forum....
Eeep, I've just been back onto BG after some time away moving house and having to wait far too long for our new interweb connection, and it's scarily huge! Its like walking down the main street of a big city on a sunny Saturday. Phew, coming here really is like diving into the dark dingy pub that no-one notices but that serves the best pint and has the really interesting old geezer propping up the bar.
Don't get me wrong, I think its marvellous that so many people are interested in Steampunk (hopefully that means there might be a market for my work, hehe!) but going on BG after a while away made me realise how much is being repeated there, and how some of the really interesting stuff is getting lost or is getting hard to find. It is, as you say, Prof. George, really quite daunting.
Or maybe I'm just getting old

Sure it's quieter here than in it's heyday, but... it's still worth coming along to see what's going on every few days.

I'm comming a little less frequently than that, but so do I.
I rather like your analogy, Plum.
Hah. "Who is tired of BrassGoggles is tired of life, for all of human life is there"! Finding the bit you're after, however...

I'm not sure I like being described as a "really interesting old geezer who is propping up the bar." :-P
But the analogy is good.

#Begins pouring tea into a large waterpistol labelled "High-speed tea delivery system".
Looks around guiltily.#
What?
It'd be...more efficient.
