Alrighty, first off, I think this topic could help a good number of people, both new to making such curiousities as we are wont to do, and those that are old hands at it. Now that that's out of the way:

Where I used to live, I had access to just about every tool imaginable (benefits of living in an area surrounded by farms while not having farm yourself. And having several relatives who were craftsmen of all sorts), but I was never much into the making aspect of steampunk.

And then ...

I would normally post some creation pics (and i will) but for now i will only post what items i am using and a teaser shot

I am calling this the Sniper's Monoggle

I'm doing up and old leather satchel and planning to reinforce the corners with some brass plates with cut-out detail, rather like filligree if I can get it fine enough.

So- what's the best way to cut out the holes in the brass sheets? Snips inevitably leave turned-up, sharp edges which I want to minimise. I'm told you can do it with a wire point connected to a source of electricity. Obviously I have no clue about or even the name of the process to search for!

Does anyone understand ...

I didn't find one until this weekend (when I found a whole pile of moose antlers, one white tail deer antler) and a corkscrew. We have now dismantled the corkscrew and intend to use the handle for the cane. The corkscrew was sold as "horn with a sterling silver cap" the rest of the corkscrew is steel, but the "horn" appears to actually ...

I am considering fabricating some Steampunk buttons from polymer clay. The first design I am planning is buttons made to look like gears with three holes. One should backstitch through the holes to form a triangular "axle" design to fasten them to clothing. The other is buttons that look like clocks, with the holes designed so that when fastened the thread forms the hour and minute hands. They would be around 3/4" to 1" in diameter, as I plan them.

I had thought about going to a turbine generator setup but I think I'll go straight mechanical.

So off I went to Michael's for the findings, and after playing around with the bits and pieces I ended up with, I came up with these:

Watch pin

Back of watch pin, showing pin back, S hook, and back of decorative button (used to hide the top of the S hook that is stuck into a slot in the velvet ribbon)

Here's my problem--I almost never wear cream, so this hat rarely gets any use. I used to wear it with a cream suit, but that was over 20 years ago, and I've worn it maybe twice since then. However, I really love the style, and think I would get a lot more wear out of this hat if I could change it to black. I have considered dyeing it, but I have no idea if the ...

Said epoxy is pink and not clear as expected! (I was most shocked at the colour of the hardening resin!)

Despite much stirring and care, the glow powder is not solidly mixed throughout the epoxy, resulting in uneven and rather poor glow.

Perhaps mixing 10ml of epoxy in a poorly ventilated (at the time) room was not the best idea. Windows are now open and fans are on....

Hello all. It's very nice to be back, and I must say the temporary housing is quite comfortable. While away, in between all the "working" and "writing" and "preparing for a cross-country move", I found time to cave in to one of the great Goggler cliches -- building a steampunk raygun.

I've been very impressed by several of the weapons I've seen in this forum, but I've consistently wondered why I never saw one based solidly on the aesthetics of pistols common ...

Hello and Good-Morning everyone~

I have just yesterday gotten a-hold of a 1920's era Underwood typewriter. My original plan was to destroy it in the name of science, and, more specifically, an attempt at the nefarious "keyboard mod".

(featured: an online example, mine is black-and-green, and just as clean!)

However, complications arose upon discovering that the Underwood in question is a very beautiful and nigh-functional mechanism. Here lies the riddle:

the cases were tiny like womens watches but the areas for straps were slightly stronger lugs than most wrist watches, and they had holes completely through the lugs.

For free!

YAY!

It is severely worn and smells of basement but free is free!

Now what do I do with it?

It's HUGE and smelly and I love it. It's going to be part of our pirate haunt for Halloween but I'm not sure what to do with it otherwise.

Any usefull tips on getting the "basement musty" aroma out of wood?

As I stated the other day I've just started work on a new leather bag. I'm going to take my time on this, but I'm going to document the build process as I go along.

So far I've cut most of the leather out. I've made several sketches and one full size paper template so I already know what I'm planning on doing. I have purchased a double shoulder in 8-9oz leather (about 13 square feet at $5 per square foot) and most of it is going to be used in this one bag. I have also ...

How's your better half doing with the luminous dodad finder?

Of course, I use the term "better half" in its loosest and most provocative manner.

Still agog,

They're mine!

From Jingle Joe, er... a traveling carpet-bagger, I acquired a couple bottles of the stuff; for my wife and myself. And I gotta tell ya, this stuff is great. Just holding the bottles gave me the wisdom to know that I should give my wife the smaller of the two. Just so she wouldn't think, that I thought, that she needed the stuff more then me.

They are great looking 70-80 year old bottles, with well designed labels, and handmade corks. If you don't think you need ...

Cody's kite was a massive, bulky, complicated kite - a box-kite with more bells and whistles than it knew what to do with. It's as if the inventor saw that a box-kite was good, so he got two, and then saw that wings were good, so he added four, and then scalloped the wing edges just for that Addams look (of course the scalloping is really to reduce flutter). It's a triumph of wild over-engineering.

The thing generated massive amounts of lift, enough to be used as a man-lifter for ...

I propose that this thread be used to expand on ideas and theories for projects both real and hypothetical. Such as how a Death ray might actually work, designs for a new kind of airship propulsion, or ideas for the (perfectly legal) still you've always wanted to build.

For instance, I've recently come up with an idea for a magnesium lock, or mag lock, firearm. It's basically a Flint lock mechanism. Replacing the flint hammer with a steel one, and the frizzen and powder pan with a magnesium ...

My most recent project!

COGGLES.

I decided that i should make myself a pair of steampunk goggles!

So i did!

This is the result!

I'm relatively happy with how they came out.

The eyecups fit snug as a bug, hopefully they'll do the same when i add the leather.

Then I still have to add leather chord for the strap.

unfortunately one of the little "flower Petal" tabs cracked while i was riveting them down to the eye cup.

For a first attempt at steampunk craft, ...
