Hello forum members, esteemed collegues, ladies, gentlemen, etc.

New poster/forum member here.

I am working on a design for a wind-up flyer for a spinning wheel. The flyer is the part that collects the spun yarn onto the bobbin. There are geared-versions of a flyer-winder out there, namely the WooLee Winder, which is a fine winder, but you cant use your own bobbin on the flyer, they sell geared bobbins at a hefty price that only fit on their winder.

I have been wracking my brain ...

Alrighty, first off, I think this topic could help a good number of people, both new to making such curiousities as we are wont to do, and those that are old hands at it. Now that that's out of the way:

Where I used to live, I had access to just about every tool imaginable (benefits of living in an area surrounded by farms while not having farm yourself. And having several relatives who were craftsmen of all sorts), but I was never much into the making aspect of steampunk.

This was posted in BG last night, thought it could go here as well to gauge any reaction before it becomes another forgotten project, drifting int he endless wastes of the Neverwas.

In the "UK register of Interests" thread [on BG] a lot of people lived near to, or had links with, Malvern in Worcestershire. It is also a very pretty part of the country, so the idea of having a meet there has been bounced around on one or two occasions.

This may be a bit of a vain post, but can anyone here do wizardry with photoshop? I would love some nice Steampunk themed pictures of me to throw around the internet, but I have no idea where to start

I've seen pictures of people that look as if they're in an amazing fantasy Steam environment, but it's all just photo manipulation.

So, if anyone can help me out (and you can laugh at any pics I send you!) then I'll be most grateful and of course, credit you wherever neccessary.

Many Thanks.

Words of advice for young people.

William S Burroughs wrote a piece called "Words of advice for young people" which can be found here.

So, I was wondering if any of you have any words of advice for young people. The age of the person saying it is irrelevant.

What prompted this in my mind were the immortal words of Woody Guthrie while I was washing dishes this morning... "Keep your skillet good and greasy".

So, what advice would you like to share?

When we purchased our house 6 or 7 years ago, we loved almost everything about it. Almost. We hated the fireplace. It was BIG--way too big for the space--and made of ugly white bricks (not white PAINTED--both bricks and mortar are white), and the white brick hearth is 9 inches high. Various attempts to improve the looks of the monstrosity included building bookshelves on each side, and decorating it extensively for Christmas and other holidays. Here is a Christmas pic of the fireplace:
