Yup. Seems to be every few days, though not as regular as clockwork...how inappropriate.

Scandalous. Our unplanned outages should be kept to a regular schedule! I shall write to the Times and my MP!

Do we (and by "we", I mean, "someone other than me") have any clue as to why such things happen? I come back after a time away, and immediately it goes down again - perhaps I am the cause?

It's NOT ME!!
To be fair, this particular outage appears to be affecting the whole VPS node we're on. Either something is terribly awry with our host's service at the moment (perhaps an attack?), or we managed to start a server on fire. ;-)
The former seems most likely. Follow brasstech on twitter for updates as I get them.

Maybe I should start to follow up with my threat.... offer.... idea to host the BG forum myself...
Seriously, I can donate the hardware no problems, all I would need is maybe a *little* help with paying the costs of a buisiness grade internet connection - and the guarantee that the blog / forum will never break again!

I shall pay you a billion internet dollars for this service. Sadly, the exchange rate being what it is, that only amounts to a single real dollar. But I would give it, nonetheless!

Update
Server never came back online after "routine maintenance".
Sorry about all the downtime folks, but this time it's out of my hands. Believe it or not, I *am* working on things that will improve the situation, but I inherited a bit of a mess, so the going is slow.

Thank you, Proteus. I'm just glad I found this forum to get something of a fix to keep me going. Guess I'll go read a book...

Is that tea ready yet? Looked for the brandy under the stairs and couldn't find it. If there's any left, I'd like a slug in my tea, thanks.

I appreciate your generosity, but honestly this is the first time the outage has been the result of our host since we moved to A2 (don't get me started on the old Fasthosts a-holes). Most of the outages are caused by running oddly configured, patched-into-oblivion versions of software that were never meant or set up to handle the volume we currently get.
Moving BG onto your servers instead of A2's wouldn't help that situation, sadly. I am working on fixing the root cause, but I have to go slow (because this is something I do in my spare time, which I don't have much of these days), and be very careful (because I don't want to lose the "archives" in the process).
If you know a lot about properly configuring lighttpd, mysql, and PHP in CGI mode, though - I'd welcome your help on things!

Considering how much you kindly donated, I am amazed the board keeps crashing, it makes me wonder where your money has gone. I'm not saying its been nicked or squandered, but surely with those sorts of numbers in the old coffer we could at least afford a server that can cope?
